Biography

Gained reputation for his expertise in engineering for large building earthquake resistance Hobbies - Photography and travel

Warner Howe was born February 25, 1919. Like his father, Harry Northrop Howe, he earned Civil Engineering degree at Cornell University. After graduation 1941, he began work with the U S Corp of Engineers in Panama Canal Zone. Geraldine joined him to be married November 5, 1941. When design of the Third Locks was suspended, he volunteered for Navy and was Personnel Officer with 129th CB's in Hawaii and Philippines. When WWII ended, he joined his father in Gardner & Howe Consulting Structural Engineers. G&H designed structure of Baptist Hospital Central and East, St Francis Hospital, and 1st Tennessee Bank on Madison Avenue.

He is tireless advocate of high ethical standards. Was president of Memphis Rotary Club, Memphis and National Society of Professional Engineers, the Engineers Club; chairman of National ASCE Codes and Standards Committee & the Joint Memphis and Shelby County Building Code Advisory Board. President Ford appointed him and President Carter reappointed him as member of first Board of Directors of the National Institute of Building Sciences. Active in the creation of National Building Seismic Safety Council, he served as chairman. An active member of Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, he was instrumental in choice of AutoZone headquarters’ design the first seismically "Base Isolated" building structure in Eastern USA. Obituary WARNER HOWE Warner Howe passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Born February 25, 1919, graduated Cornell University 1941, joined Gardner & Howe Structural Engineers, retired 1992. Lifetime member of Memphis Rotary. US Presidents Ford and Carter appointed him to the National Institute of Building Sciences. G&H structures: Baptist Hospital Central/East, St Francis Hospital, Southern College of Optometry, Liberty Bowl expansion, AutoZone headquarters. A faithful husband to his "sweetheart" for 65 years, Geraldine Presley Howe, deceased Dec 16, 2007; was a loyal friend and member Christ United Methodist Church. Developed Alzheimer's disease and was cared for by his daughter until his passing. Survived by: Richard Warner Howe, Robert Harry Howe (Jody), Allen Northrop Howe (Trish), David Avent Howe, Susan Howe Crowson (Nat); grandchildren: Kelsey, Anna, Lizz, David, Leland, Taylor Rose, Christine and Jenna Michele. In lieu of flowers or meals, memory donations to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org.
