Biography

John Howe was born in 1687 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. His birth year is based on his death year of 1627, when he was "in the 40th year of his age".[1] His parents were Samuel and Mary (Nutting) Howe, who were residents of Concord when John was born. (Note: Concord town and vital records are missing for the years 1685-1687).

Samuel and Mary Howe moved from Concord to Plainfield, Windham, Connecticut Colony about 1700, as their daughter Sarah married in Concord in January 1699/1700, and Samuel was one of the original organizers of the town of Plainfield in 1699.[2]

John married Phebe Butterfield on 13 April 1709, in Plainfield.[1] They had seven children, all born in Plainfield:[1][2]

  1. Josiah Howe (22 Mar 1710/1-1 Nov 1759), married Patience Day
  2. John (6 Aug 1712-28 Jul 1807), married Mary Wheeler
  3. Louise (Lucy) (08 Mar 1714)
  4. James (07 Oct 1715), married Joanna Spalding
  5. Samuel (24 Jun 1716-08 Nov 1790), married Martha Spaulding, then Mary Turner
  6. Jonathan (03 Apr 1724-13 Apr 1724)
  7. Jonas (13 Jun 1726-09 May 1776), married Sarah Wheeler

John Howe died on 27 August 1727. "The records of Plainfield show that an inventory was taken in Sept. 1727, and a distribution of the estate was made on I March 1732-3, mentioning his widow Phebe, Josiah his eldest son, John second son, Samuel third son, James fourth son, and his daughter Lucy."[2]

John's widow Phebe passed away on 3 December 1758, in Plainfield.[1]
