Biography

Joseph Edwin Howe, the son of William Franklin Howe and Maria Elizabeth Jenkins, was born on 16 Oct 1878 in Hillsdale, Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada[1]. Joseph married Annie Elizabeth Starr Chipman, daughter of John Ross Chipman and Sarah Eliza Starr, on 1 Nov 1907 in Cornwallis Township, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada[2].

He attended school at Acadia University between 1902 and 1905 in Wolfville, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada[3] where he was also a member of the rugby football team at Acadia University between 1903 and 1904[4]. He attended Yale University[5] in New Haven, Connecticut, USA to further his education.

He received his license as a teacher of the First Class in New Brunswick about 1897[6] and was a teacher for most of his adult life. He was a teacher at Horton Academy between 1905 and 1907[7] in Wolfville and later the headmaster between 1908 and 1912[3]. Between 1921 and 1943 he was a teacher of history at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada[3]. He was later a professor at Acadia University between 1947 and 1949 in Wolfville[3].

Joseph died on 22 Sep 1952 in the East Kings Memorial Hospital in Wolfville, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada[1][8]. He was buried on 24 Sep 1952 in the Chipmans Corner Cemetery at Chipmans Corner, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada[9].
