Biography

Knight and Baronet, 2nd Baronet Howe, of Wishford and Little Compton, Sheriff of Wiltshire (1668).

Background

Richard Grobham Howe was the eldest son of Sir John Howe, 1st Baronet, of Little Compton, Withington, Gloucestershire, and the brother of John Grobham Howe.

Education

He matriculated from Hart Hall, Oxford, on 27 March 1640.

He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn on 24 February 1640/1.

Member of Parliament

He was MP for Wilton from 1658 to December 1660, and from 20 February 1689/90; for Wiltshire from 4 May 1675 to 12 July 1679; and for Hindon from 23 August 1679 to 28 March 1681.

Knight and Baronet

He was Knighted about 1665. He succeeded his father as 2nd Baronet in 1671.

Bridgwater Manor, Somerset

'In 1626 it was granted to Sir William and Sir George Whitmore, who had both been lessees of the estate. In 1627 George conveyed the manor, but not the castle, to Sir Richard Grobham, husband of his sister Margaret. Grobham died in 1629 leaving his widow in possession with remainder to his nephew George Grobham of Broomfield. George died probably in 1646, and in 1652 John Howe the elder, husband of Sir Richard's sister and heir Jane, together with a Richard Grobham, were apparently in possession of the estate. The manor continued in the Howe family, probably with little land, descending from John and Jane Howe to their son John (cr Bt 1660), to Sir John's son Sir Richard Grobham Howe (d by 1703), and to Sir Richard's son and namesake (d 1730), owner in 1704-5. No further reference to the manor has been found.'[1]

Marriages and family

He married (1ly) by 1642 (with £4,000), Lucy St John, daughter of Sir John St John, 1st Baronet, of Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire, and they had five sons (4 dvp) and four daughters.

He married (2ly) Anne King, widow of John Dutton, of Sherborne, Dorset, and daughter of John King DD, Bishop of London (1611-12), sp.

Death and burial

He died on 1 May 1703, aged 81. He was buried in Great Wishford on 12 May 1703.

His Will was dated 19 December 1701, and Proved on 27 August 1703 (PCC 142 Degg).

Note on Grobham name

His paternal grandmother, Joan Grobham Howe, was heiress to her brother, Sir Richard Grobham. The Complete Baronetage and other sources erroneously have the spelling as Grubham.
