SUFFOCATED BY FOUL AIR.— Mr. J. Illingworth, J. P., held a magisterial inquiry at the parents' residence, Booth street, touching the death of Henry Cornelius Cross Howe, aged 13 years, who was suffocated by foul air in an abandoned shaft at Phillips' Hill, Golden Square, on Friday afternoon. Senior-Constable Cantwell and Constable Walsh were present on behalf of the police. The deceased descended the shaft, which was about 40ft deep, to get a cricket ball. When near the bottom he was overcome by foul air, and fell. His brother, Henry Stephen Howe, in trying to rescue him was also overcome by the foul gases, and was only saved by the forethought of Mr. R. Whitford, who threw several buckets of water down and thereby dissipated the poisonous fumes. Evidence bearing our report of the occurrence, was given by Henry Stephen Howe, the deceased’s brother, Garnett Victor Thomson and Arthur Whitford. Dr. A. G. McGowan, locum tenens for Dr. W. H. James, stated that he was present when the deceased was brought to the surface. The body was then of an ashen grey color. He injected hypodermically, a hundredth of a grain of strychnine, and tried artificial means to restore respiration. There were, however, no attempts at respiration, and he could not feel the heart beating. After trying half an hour to restore animation he gave up the task. He had since made a post mortem examination. There were a few bruises about the chest caused when trying to restore respiration, but no bones were broken. The wind pipe was conjested (sic) , and contained mucus, the left side of the heart was contracted, the lungs engorged with blood, as also was the liver, spleen and kidneys. The cause of death was suffocation from bad air. A verdict to that effect was returned. The remains were interred in the Bendigo Cemetery yesterday afternoon.
