Biography

Samuel was born in 1787 in Henry County, Virginia. He was the son of Paul Howell, III, and his wife, Martha. Samuel married Lucy Witt on 6 Feb. 1810 in Patrick Co., VA [1]

Prior to Samuel and Lucy Witt Howell's birth of their second child Samuel's brother, James Howell, married Lucy's sister, Hester Witt. James and Hester were married February 28, 1812, in Patrick County, Virginia. Lucy and Hester's father was William Witt.

Samuel and Lucy's Children:

  • Fountain [b. 1810]
  • Mark Anthony [b. 1813]
  • Paul [b. 1816]
  • Martha [b. 1820]

Have in my possession a copy of an Indenture where Samuel is selling land to James. Samuel also makes reference to his father, "P. Howell." The Indenture is dated January 17, 1824.

Samuel passed away in December of 1874 in Patrick County, Virginia.

1850 U.S. Census, Patrick County, Virginia. Samuel born about 1787 and Lucy born about 1789. Occupation farmer with real estate valued at $800. Sam is listed as deaf.

1860 U.S. Census, Patrick County, Virginia, South District, Samuel Howell born Virginia; Deaf; Farmer; Real estate value $2525; Personal estate value $2175. No wife listed (verifies that wife is deceased before 1860).[3]
