Ann Eliza Howell was born on July 27, 1852 in Bastrop, Morehouse, Louisiana, United States, daughter of Alexander Wilburn Howell (1827–1858) and Eliza Ann Naff (1833– ). Little is recorded of her family but as Louisiana farmers, life circumstances were no doubt challenging as economic pressures increased prior to the Civil War. Her father migrated from Alabama prior to her birth, likely in search of fertile land and good trading markets. At the time Ann was born, there were very few solutions to avoid infant mortality, particularly when born premature as Ann may have been. Regardless, she experienced her short lifetime at home in the care of hopeful parents who no doubt mourned her loss.
Ann died on July 30, 1852 in Bastrop, aged 3d. [1]
