Enlisted: Oct 11, 1861
Mustered out: N/A
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 56th Regiment, Ohio Infantry

Jeremiah Howell was born in 1805 in Pendleton County, Virginia, United States. His parents were Jeremiah Howell and Mary Warner. From 1816 to 1831, he lived in Lewis County, West Virginia.

Jeremiah had two wives and two families. First he married Sarah Abbott. Together they had 5 children:

  1. Augustus Howell
  2. Nathaniel Howell
  3. Harriet Howell
  4. Francis Howell
  5. Aretus Howell

His second was Julia Dotson. There is some debate as to whether they were ever actually wedded, and in fact she had her widow's pension turned down due to lack of proof of the marriage. They had five children:

  1. John Howell
  2. Eliza Howell
  3. Napoleon Dotson
  4. Sirena Howell
  5. William Howell

After 1840, Julia Dotson moved in to the home of Jeremiah Howell and his wife Sarah. He stayed with Sarah until some time around 1855-1856 when he left her for good and moved with Julia Dotson and her children to a farm owned by Charles Gee just above Gallipolis in Gallia County, Ohio. They lived here about 1 year before relocating to a farm owned by Wash Thompson below Springville in Greenup County, Kentucky. They lived here about one year.

After that, they moved to Batyville, which is in the lower end of Springville, Kentucky, and remained here about 3 or 4 years.

By 1860, Julia Howell was living as a "domestic" in merchant Reuben Thomson's household in the town of Springville, Greenup County, Kentucky with her son Henry. Jeremiah does not appear in the census. Jeremiah and Julia are presumed to be separated by this time. Son-in-law Grafton Windle stated in Scioto County, Ohio court in 1862 that Jeremiah and Julia had not lived together for many years when he was appointed guardian to Julia's children after Jeremiah's death in the Civil War.

Tanner and Farm Laborer

Civil War

Jeremiah enrolled as a musician (fifer) in Company D, 56th Ohio Regiment Infantry on October 11, 1861 at Portsmouth Ohio during the Civil War. He gave his age at enrollment as 45 even though he was actually about 56 years of age. Forty five was the oldest age allowed for volunteers. He died March 27, 1862 of chronic diarrhea at Crump's Landing, Tennessee just prior to the battle of Shiloh.

Jeremiah is buried in Shiloh, Tennessee.
