Biography

Elizabeth "Betsy" Howell was born in 1790, a daughter of Benjamin Howell, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and his first wife, Elizabeth Brooks. [1] After the War, Elizabeth's family moved from Orange county, North Carolina, to Grainger county, Tennessee, where she was probably born.

On February 19, 1807, in Granger county, Tennessee, Benjamin Howell and William Boatman made a contract for the marriage of Elizabeth to William Boatman. The contract was witnessed by Henry Boatman. [2] (See image) Elizabeth and William became the parents of nine children, born in Grainger county, Tennessee:

  • Robert Boatman, born 1809, died circa 1860, married Edcy/Edith (?nee)
  • John W. Boatman, born circa 1810, died circa 1864, married Rebecca Shore, in 1835, in Bradley county, Tennessee
  • William B. Boatman, born 1812, died in 1860, in Texas county, Missouri, married Eliza (?nee)
  • Richard Boatman, born 1813, died 1894, married 1) Mary Caroline Garrett and 2) Elizabeth Hatcher
  • George Washington Boatman, born circa 1815, died December 3, 1862, in Richmond, Powhatan county, Virginia, during the American Civil War, married Sarah (?nee)
  • Boatman son, born circa 1816, died circa 1840, married Susanna (?nee) father of Christopher Columbus Boatman
  • Mary Ann Boatman, born June 4, 1825, died March 11, 1887, in Wright county, Missouri, married circa 1853, in Missouri to Benjamin "Buck" Ellis [3]
  • Andrew J. Boatman, born January 9, 1828, died April 13, 1888, in Wright county, Missouri, married in 1855 to Sarah Elizabeth Brown [4]
  • Tempy Demarius Boatman (daughter) born circa 1832, married David Adkins.

Researcher's Notes

Before the American Civil War, Elizabeth and her family had migrated from Tennessee to Walker county, Georgia, where she died in 1860. Her family continued to migrate west and her husband, after her death was living in Wright county, Missour, probably with one of several of their children that migrated there, and that is where he died.
