Levi, son of Charles and Mary Howell, was born in Wayne County, Indiana, March 1, 1831 departed this life March 7, 1907 aged 76 years and 6 days.
He was one of a family of twelve children, six boys and six girls, two of whom are still living.
He was married February 13. 1851, to Sarah L. Lindsey with whom he lived until her death in 1902, their companionship having continued for fifty years.
He was the father of nine children, two of whom died infancy. Two married daughters, Mrs. America Ross and Mrs. Jane Gilliam are also deceased.
There remain two sons John and William Howell and three daughters, Mrs. Emily Hunt, Mrs. Ann Neal and Mrs. Dora Golliher.
With the except of Mrs. Neal whose home is in Illinois, the children were with him and ministered to his wants through his illness.
He was converted at the age of nineteen and united with the M. E. church of which he remained a member until released from earth to join the church triumphant.
He was licensed as a local preacher in his early manhood and was active in the work of the church for many years.
From the time of his marriage his home has been in this part of Randolph County, the greater part of the time having been spent on the farm which was his home at the time of his death.
His last illness was very severe and of several months' duration; but his faith sustained him and we are assured that his soul is at rest.
He leaves but few survivors of his day and generation for most of them have gone to the other side. We who are younger will miss the aged brother who was so faithful at the house of God and whose earnest testimony was a part of every social service which he attended. But while there is a vacant place on earth, there is one more in heaven to swell the charms of praise to Him who hath washed us and redeemed us with his own precious blood.
