Biography

Eliza Agnes Howell was born at Southampton, Hampshire, England in the 4th quarter of 1859[1] and baptised on the 22nd of January, 1860, at St Michael, Southampton.[2] She was the daughter of Henry Howell and Jane Bone.

Eliza recorded as 1 year old at the 1861 census.[3]

The McGuires moved to Ireland sometime between 1864 and the birth of William Henry Howell in 1866 - unfortunately the 1871 Irish census was destroyed.

Eliza married George Fleming Bryce at St. Jude's church, Glasgow, on the 5th of January, 1880.[4] Their children included John?, Eliza, George, William, James, Robert, and Harry.

In 1881 George and Eliza were living in Tradeston, Glasgow, with their son 'Johr' Bryce. George was employed as a hatter.[5]

At the 1891 census Eliza was living at 17 Holburn Rd Aberdeen Old Machar with two children and her sister Anna. Present were Eliza A Bryce (31) who was mis-recorded as a "Marine Engineer's Wife", her children Eliza (8) and James (8 months), and Anna Howell (16) Drapers Shopwoman (unemployed).[6] George was was working as a hatters salesman, and that night he was lodging at 10 Garland Place, Dundee.[7]

By 1901 they had moved to 7 Shandon Cres, Edinburgh, and George was working as a hatter and hosier. The children present were: Eliza (age 17) who was employed as a music teacher, George (15), William (14), James (10), Robert (7), and Harry (4). They also had a servant: Mary Fraser, aged 17.[8]

She died at 46 Craigmillar Park, Edinburgh, on the 27th of November, 1953,[9] and was buried in the North Merchiston Cemetery, Edinburgh.[10]
