James was born in 1843. He was the eldest of thirteen children of William Howell and Mary Knight. [1]
He married Sally Ballard in Pike County in 1868, [2]
James was a bootmaker.
He passed away in 1911.
James fought on the Confederate side. He was a Corporal in the 13th Georgia Infantry, Company A. [3] [4]
From Muster Roll of Company A, 13th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry Evans' Brigade, Gordon's Division Army of Northern Virginia C. S. A. Pike County, Georgia "Confederate Guards:":
Howell, James H. - 1st Corporal July 8, 1861. Wounded at Sharpsburg, Md. September 17, 1862; Gettysburg, Pa. July 2, 1863; Cold Harbor, Va. June 1, 1864. Wounded and captured at Fisher's Hill, Va. September 22, 1864. Paroled at Point Lookout, Md. in 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga. for exchange, November 15, 1864. On extension of sick furlough February 28, 1865. No later record.[5]
His father, William fought with the 66th Georgia infantry and died during the war in 1864.
