Biography

Christian, son of Christian Y. Howell and Mary Jane Salmon,^[1] was born 7 June 1872 in San Joaquin County, California.^[1][2] He grew up in Castoria, San Joaquin County, where in 1880 the household neighboring the Salmons and Reynolds consisted of his parents Christian, Sr. (age 45, farmer, b. Ohio) and Mary Howell (27, b. Wisconsin), Christian (6), his siblings Mary (11), Emma (10) and Effa (2), and a farmhand Daniel T. Sutton (28).^[3]

On 12 November 1895 in San Joaquin County, he married Dove Adeline Reynolds,^[4] daughter of Henry Reynolds and Keziah McHenry.^[5] They had a child who was born and died before 1900^[2] and one son who lived:

• Robley Alvin Howell (b. 10 May 1908;^[6][7][8] m. and divorced Mabel Alberta Abt,^[9] d. 25 December 1979).^[7][8] No issue.

After their marriage the couple settled on a portion of his mother's farm in Castoria Township, San Joaquin County. In 1900 the household was composed of Christian, Jr. (age 28, farmer) and Dove R. Howell (28), his maternal uncle James N. Salmon (50, horse trader) and Dovey's widowed mother Kezia Reynolds (65, mother of eight, six living).^[2]

They remained in Castoria Township in 1910, when the household included Christian (age 36, farmer) and Dovie Howell (38), their son Robley A. (2), Dovie's mother Kezia Reynolds (75) and a laborer Frederick Farnham (60).^[10]

On 17 June 1915, Christian placed the watch that he said he wanted his son to have under Robley's pillow prior to walking to a neighboring ranch to shoot himself in the heart.^[1][11] His body was found by a ranch hand and buried at East Union Cemetery in Manteca, San Joaquin County.^[11]

• Birth Year: Find-a-Grave and his headstone show his birth in 1873;^[11] however, his death record^[1] and the 1900 census give 1872. Additionally, his marriage record indicates he is only one year younger than Dovey (1872).^[4]
