He was a farmer. He first appears on the 1850 census as Preston Hourey in the West District of Fayette County, now West Virginia. About 1857 he was a member of the Virginia State Legislature. [Wood.] The 1870 and 1880 censuses show him at Little River, Floyd County. In 1877 he was living at Floyd in Floyd County, Virginia. [Chataigne, 1877.] John H. Howery and J. P. Howery, his sons, were living near him. Chataigne's 1884-85 directory does not show him, but shows [his son] James P. Howery and [cousin] Isaac W. Howery at Little River in Floyd County. The 1888-1889 directory shows a post village, Howery's, in Floyd County, which does not appear in earlier editions.
A descendant still owns the same land and lives across the road from the Pine Creek Cemetery where many members of this family are buried.
In the 1860 census Preston was a slave owner in Floyd, Virginia, United States.[1]
