When Solomon Howes was born on December 16, 1823, in Chatham, Massachusetts, Solomon's father Kimball Howes, was 20 and Solomon's mother Barbara Crowell, was 16. He married Margaret A B Small on July 27, 1846. They had four children during their marriage; Benjamin Lovell, Solomon, Margaret A, and Richard. Solomon started his career as a sailor promoting to admiral. Solomon was well known. as "flag captain" of the fleet at the Merchants' and Miners' Transportation Company. During the Civil War Solomon he commanded the S.R. Spaulding, one of the first transports carrying troops and supplies between Fortress Monroe and southern ports. This steamer was later commissioned as a vessel of war and rendered valuable service to Burnside at the battle of Roanoke. His valuable service on this expedition Captain Howes was handsomely recompensed and received credentials of honor from the government. He died on July 4, 1891, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at the age of 67.

Cambridge Chronicle, Volume 46, Number 2368, 11 July 1891 Capt. Solomon Howes. Capt. Solomon Howes died .Saturday at 11114 Broadway of paralysis. He was 64 years old and was born at Chatham. He was a captain in the service of the Merchants' and Miners' Transportation Company for more than 30 years. He had also commanded various vessels for other owners. During the Rebellion he commanded the S. R. Spaulding, carrying; troops and supplies between Fortress Monroe and Southern ports. On accouut of his valuable services Capt. Howes received credentials of honor from the! government. In 1884, by the resignation of Arastus Sampson, agent of the trans-pin-union company and admiral of the fleet, Capt. Howes was appointed to fill the position. He was a member of the Hoston Marine Society. Deceased leaves a widow and two sous. The funeral was held at , 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the house, only the immediate relatives and friends attending. Rev D. N Beach of the Prospect Street Church officiated. The interment was made at Mt. Auburn.

Death of Solomon Howes. Captain Solomon Howes, a well-known ship master, died on July 4 at his home, 334 Broadway, from the effects of a paralytic stroke received five years ago. Captain Howes was born at Chatham, December 16, 1824, and at an early age shipped on several long fishing voyages. He was made captain of the barque Wyman in the spring of 1848 and later commanded the Baltimore packet, Helen Maria. Upon the establishment of the Merchants' and Miners' Transportation company, in 1854, he was placed in charge of the Joseph Jefferson, the first ship built by the company. During his thirty years' career as captain he has commanded several of the best ships on the line. Before the war broke out he superintended the building of the company's vessels at Wilmington. During the Southern campaign he commanded the S. R, Spaulding, one of the first transports carrying troops and supplies between Fortress Monroe and southern ports. This steamer was afterward commissioned as a vessel of war and rendered valuable service to Burnside at the battle of Roanoke. On account of his valuable services on this expedition Captain Howes was handsomely recompensed and received credentials of honor from the government. In 1884, Erastus Sampson, general agent of the company, resigning as admiral of its fleet and as senior captain, Captain Howes was appointed to fill the position. On account of a paralytic shock, received two years later, he was obliged to retire from active business, and had been confined for the past year to his home. He was a member of the Boston Marine society. A widow and two sons survive him. The funeral took place, Tuesday afternoon. Rev. D. N. Beach, pastor of the Prospect-street church, conducted the services, and the regular choir of the same church furnished music. The burial was at Mount Auburn.
