Mary was born in 1802 in Scotland. She was the daughter of William Howie andJanet Picken [1]

She married Hugh Reid in 1835 [2]

In 1837 the Reids came to the United States and were one of the first families to settle what would become the Scottish Settlement at Argyl.

They had three children, the youngest, James was the first boy to be born at the settlment.

When Alexander McDonald and his wife Margaret died, leaving six young children, the Reids took in James. [3]

She passed away in 1885.


From FindAGrave: Rockford Daily Gazette, Tuesday, July 14, 1885

Died - At her late residence on Saturday morning, at 3 a. m., Mrs. Hugh Reid, aged about 84 years. The funeral was held Sunday at the house, where a large concourse of people gathered to pay their last respects to a kind neighbor and true friend. There were teams in the procession from the house to the cemetery.
