Jane was an early resident of the Scottish Immigrant Settlement in Argyle, Illinois

Jane was born in 1799 in Scotland. She was the daughter of William Howie and Janet Picken. [1]

She married Andrew Giffen in 1825. [2]

In 1839 they came to the United States. They were one of the first residents of the Scottish Settlement in Argyll

She passed away in 1841.

"After their arrival Jane Huie Giffen was the first adult to pass away. She died in 1841 from the hardships of pioneering. "[3]

She was the second member of the Scottish Settlement to die. She was buried in an Oak grove on Robert Howie’s farm. When the Scottish Cemetery was established in 1859 her remains were moved there. [4]
