Cyril William Howie was born on 7 May 1889 at Timaru.[1] His birth was registered at Mount Grey, Canterbury, New Zealand.[2] He was the second son of William Howie and Elizabeth Unwin.
He married Johanna Gielow in 1915.

On 20 October 1915, Cyril signed attestation papers to join the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at Trentham, Wellington. His assigned unit was the Camp Military Police. The form also stated that his previous employer was a Mr Freeman, Ohinewai (near Huntly), Waikato and his next of kin was his wife, Johanna Howie, 5 Pitt Terrace, Auckland. [4]
They had the following children, Ian Douglas Howie, Betty Zair Howie, Rona Howie and Colin Roche Howie. They lived in Carterton.
In 1919, Cyril took a leave of absence in lieu of discharge. Cyril was described as being 29 years of age, 6 feet tall, brown hair, blue eyes with a sallow complexion.[5]
Cyril passed away 12 June 1948 at Carterton, Wellington, New Zealand. [6]
