Nathaniel was a Friend (Quaker)

Nathaniel Howland was born on 17 July 1721 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay.[1] He was the son of John Howland and Mary Cook of Dartmouth.[1][2]

He married Joanna, widow of William Howland of Dartmouth, on 18d 8m 1746 [18 Oct 1746].[2]

Nathaniel and Joanna (Ricketson) Howland had five children together as follows:

  1. Meribah (Howland) Ferris (1747)
  2. Mary (Howland) Severance (1749 - 1818)
  3. Peleg Howland (1752 - 1814)
  4. Nathaniel Howland (1756 - 1840)
  5. Sarah Howland (d. 1846)
  6. Tabby Howland

Nathaniel Howland and his family went to Pawling, Dutchess County, New York Colony, and he settled near his son Peleg Howland and his brother Isaac Howland at Quaker Hill.

He married second, Sarah White on 18 June 1767 in Dartmouth Monthly Meeting in Bristol County, Massachusetts.[3]

The Westport marriage record says, "Smith, Sarah, d. George dec'd and Deborah dec'd of Dartmouth, Bristol Co., and Nathaniel Howland of Beekmans Presink, Dutiches Co. N. Y., s. John dec'd and Mary dec'd of Dartmouth, 18th, 6 mo. 1767, in Dartmouth, C.R. (C.R.— church record, Society of Friends.)"[3]

Nathaniel and Sarah (Smith) Howland had the children together as follows:

  1. Deidamia (Howland) Sherman (abt. 1769 - 1843)
  2. Roby "Robea" (Howland) Haviland (1775 - 1863)[4][5]
  3. Deborah "Eunice" (Howland) Noxon (1781 - 1859)

He passed away before 1801.[citation needed]

DNA

Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA STR and SNP testing. Anonymous Howland and Frank Howland match on 105 out of 111 markers and share 11 SNPs, as reported by Family Tree DNA. This confirms their direct paternal lines back to their most recent common ancestor, Henry Howland Sr.
