Biography

Joseph N. Howland Jr was born on 20 Jul 1825 in Bowdoin, Sagadahoc, Maine, United States, the son of Joseph N Howland Sr and Mary (Grover) Howland.

Joseph married Cordelia Searles (1830 - 1911) on 27 Mar 1845 in Weld, Franklin, Maine. They were the parents of eleven known children:

  2. Eugene Edward Howland b. Jan 1852 at Temple, Maine, d. 1931

The 1860 US census for Perkins Plantation, served by the Weld, Maine Post Office, conducted 27 Jul 1860 lists residents Joseph Howland (34), a farmer, born at Bowdoin, Maine, his wife Cordelia (29), born at Carthage, Maine, their children Isaac (12), born at Carthage, Eugene E (8), born at Carthage, Valzora A (5), born at Carthage, Viola (3), born at Carthage and Mary M (6 months), born at Perkins Plantation. Joseph owns real estate valued at $600 and has a personal estate valued at $381.

The 1870 US census for Perkins Plantation, Franklin County, Maine, served by the Wilton, Maine Post Office, conducted on 28 Jun 1870, lists residents Joseph Howland (44), a farmer, wife Cordelia (39), Isaac G (23), a farm laborer, Eugene E (18), Elzora [sic] A (14), Viola E (12), Mary M (10), Charles H (7), Lizzie A (5), Joseph E (2) and India [sic] E (4 months), born in February. Jospeh owns real estate valued at $1000 and has a personal estate valued at $ 1070 while Isaac owns real estate valued at $300 and has a personal estate of $180.

Joseph died on 20 Jul 1907 in Wilton, Franklin, Maine aged 82. He is buried in Adams Cemetery, Wilton, Maine.
