In the Name of God Amen: The nyne and twentieth Day of January one thousand six hundred seaventy three and in the five and twentieth yeare of the Reigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles the second by the Grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith etc. I Samuel Howland Cittizen and Grocer of London being weake in body but of sound and perfect mynd and memorie, Thankes be given to God therefore, Doe make and ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner following, wherein principally I committ and commend my Soule into the hands of Almightie God my Maker, by whose Mercies through the merits Death and passion of my sweet Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ I doe onely hope and assuredly doe believe to have all my Synns pardones and forgiven in him, and that after this mortall life is ended I shall live with him forever in the Kingdome of my God, And when it shall please his divine Majestie to call my Soule from this my fraile Bodie, my desire and will is that my Bodie may be buryed in good and decent manner in the South Isle of the Abbey Church in St. Alban's in the Countie of Hertford as neare unto my Father and Mother (wholye buryed there) as conveniently may be; Item I give to the Poore of the Abbey: Parish of St. Alban aforesaid the sume of five pounds of lawfull money of England, to be distributed amongst them at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named; Item my desire is, that my loving Kinsman mr Samuel Howland and mr John Howland (sonnes of my loving Uncle Jeffery Howland esqr.) mr. Adrian Quincy mr Thomas Quincy Mr. Lancelot Hobson and Mr John Lambert (being six Bachelours) that they will accompany my Corps to the Place of Buryall, and I doe give and bequeath to each of them tenn pounds of lawfull money of England to buy them mourning. Item I give and bequeath to my deare and loving Sister Mrs. Elizabeth Hodges Mrs. Mary Manwaring and Mrs Susanna Horton, and to their respective husbands Mr. John Hodges Mr. Charles Manwaring and Mr. Richard Horton (my loving Brothers in Lawe) to each and every of them tenn Pounds of like lawfull money of England to buy them mourning; Item I give unto my Nephew Luke Hodges some of my said Sister Elizabeth Hodges the summe of fiftie pounds of like lawfull money of England; Item I give unto the three Children of my said sister Mary Manwaring (viz) Charles Manwaring [blank] Manwaring and Elizabeth Manwaring to each of them twentie pounds of like lawfull money of England; Item I give unto the five Children of my said Sister Susanna Horton (viz) Charles Horton Richard Horton Susanna Horton Elizabeth Horton and Mary Horton to each of them fiftie pounds of like lawfull money of England which I desire my Executor hereafter named will see disposed and secured to yt best advantage of my said Sister Horton's Children; Item I give to unto my Neice Elizabeth Whitfield (daughter of my loving Brother Mr John Howland) and to her husband John Whitfeild esqr. to each of them tenn pounds to buy them mourning; Item I give to Elizabeth Whitfeild and Hannah Whitfeild daughters of my said Neece Elizabeth Whitfeild tenn pounds a peice of lawfull money of England; Item I give to my loving Nephews John Howland Samuel Howland and Ralph Howland (sonnes of my said Brother John Howland) to each of them One hundred pounds of like lawfull money of England; Item I give my verie good Friend Mr Gervase Cooper of London Drugster tenn pounds of lawfull money of England; Item I give to my verie loving and kind Uncle Jeffery Howland esqr. and to my loving Aunt his wife five pounds a peice to buy them Rings in remembrance of mee; Item I give to my loving Cousins Susanna Letten Elizabeth Baron and Mary Reynaldson (daughters of my Uncle Jeffery Howland esqr.) and to their respective husbands Mr John Letten Mr. Geroge Baron and Mr. Samuell Reynaldson to each and every of them Rings of twentie shillings a peice in remembrance of mee; Item I give to my Kinsmen Walter Howland and Robert Robotham esqrs. Rings of twentie shillings a peice in remembrance of mee; Item I give fortie pounds for the defraying of the Charges of my Funeralls; Item I give unto my loving Brother Mr john Howland and to my loving sister his wife to each of them tenn pounds to buy them mourning, And of this my last Will and Testament I do ordaine constitute and appoint my said loving Brother Mr. John Howland my sole and only Executor: In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seale and published it to be my last Will and Testament the Day and yeare first abovewritten; Item I give to my good Friend Christopher Guyse of London Drugster and to his wife each of them five pounds, And likewise to my loving Friend Bernard Turner Goldsmith and to his wife each of them five pounds: Sam: Howland:. Memorandum, This nynth of February one thousand six hundred seaventie three whereas by my last Will and Testamente dated the nyne and twentieth Day of January last past I have bequeathed to Mr. John Lambert tenn Pounds to buy him Mourning (being one of the six Bachelours I desired might accompany my Corps to the Place of Buryall: I doe hereby revoake the said Bequeath as to the said John Lambert, and doe hereby will and bequeath tenn Pounds to Mr. George Aldworth to buy him mourning, desiring that hee will accompany my Corps to the place of Buryall; Item I give to my Kinsman Mr: Robert Cole the said Mr. John Lambert and Mr. Philipp Langley to each of them Rings of twenty shillings a peice: Witness my hand & ye day & yeare above Sam: Howland:.
