Biography

Hiram T Howland was born January 1834[1] in Union Springs, Cayuga county, NY[2]

He was orphaned by age 6 and lived with relatives in LeRay, Jefferson county, New York. He spent time in California during the gold rush years, then returned to Felts Mills, Jefferson county,[3] where he married Eunice R Hart in 1858[4] He operated a wood pulp mill until it burned down. Census records all give his occupation as a farmer. After Hiram's wife died in 1903, he sold (at least some of his) land in Le Ray in 1905. That year finds him living with his son Amos in Champion, Jefferson county. By 1910 he was listed as living with his son Joseph C Howland in Ogdensburg, where he died after suffering a stroke in 1917.

Research Notes

RHSeale, Oct 2019: This line does not appear to have been successfully researched. If Hiram was born in Cayuga county in the 1834 and was orphaned by the age of 6 (1840), a place to start might be the Howland surnames present in Cayuga, 1830, and absent in 1840. That would include:
Archibald Howland
Benjamin Howland
Norman Howland
Thomas Howland
and William Howland
