The biography for Matthew Howland is empty. What can you add?
Born to Kimberly (Gehrs) Howland and Paul Raymond Howland in 1987. Grandfather Carl John Gehrs was the Principal of Trinity Lutheran School in Lombard. Grandmother was Margaret (Ahrens) Gehrs. Marge lived on the farm where Madison Meadow is now in Lombard. My brothers and I grew up in the farmhouse that was built in the 1920s and were blessed to have grandpa and grandma living right next door. The community garden was on the other side of our fence and we enjoyed having many fruit trees including apples, peaches, pears and cherries. Before I was born my grandfather had grafted 10 apple varieties onto a single tree. I will fondly remember picking cherries and raspberries every summer. We also had a grape vine, green beans, carrots, cherry and heirloom tomatoes, and a big rhubarb bush that was a pain to mow around. Marge's family emigrated from Germany in the 1840s and settled in DuPage county. They were instrumental in founding Trinity Lutheran Church and School at Westmore-Meyers and Roosevelt Roads in Lombard, providing generous land grants to ensure the school had enough room to flourish and grow. Some of the farming implements used on the farm are now at the Lombard Historical society.
I am currently delving deeper into the Gehrs side of my family in Germany.
