Biography

This profile is part of the Howland Name Study.

Birth

John Howland was born April 24, 1627[1] John was the child of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. John passed away in 1702.[2][3]

Marriage

He married Mary Lee at Plymouth Colony on October 26, 1651.[3][4][5][6]

Residence

The Plymouth County records showed that on August 1643, "John Howland, Jun" was able to bear arms in Plymouth.[7][8]

Again, the Plymouth County records showed that on the first Tuesday of June 1689, Lieutenant John Howland received and was admitted as a freeman in Barnstable at the General Court held at Plymouth.[9]

Life

On 6 February 1654/5, John Howland, Jr., and his uncle, Arthur Howland performed public service on a coroner's jury inquiring into the death of a boy named John Walker, age 14, who had been a servant of Robert Latham. The jury decided that he died from cruelty and hard usage.[10]

On 3 June 1657, John Howland, Jr, and John Phillip were sworn in as the constables for the town of Marshfield.[11]

On 19 December 1657, Robert Huchin, an itinerant Quaker, held a meeting at Arthur Howland's house. William Collyare saw their practices and went over to tell Capt. Josias Winslow about what he saw. He made a warrant to give to John Phillips of Marshfield who was the constable to arrest Robert Huchin. After that, John Howland, Jr. went to warn his uncle, Arthur Howland that Capt. Josias Winslow sent John Phillips of Marshfield, the constable, on his way to break up the gathering and arrest. Arthur Howland managed to help Huchin's escape. On Sunday, the 20th of December, the constable went to Arthur Howland's house and found no man at his house. The next day, on Monday, the 21st of December, John Phillips returned to his house to tell Arthur Howland to answer him tomorrow about why he entertained with the Quaker, suffered, and invited sundry to hear the Quaker into his house.[12] He was about to arrest Robert Huchin, but Arthur Howland would not let him and hindered his arrest. He pushed him out of his house and told him that he would have either a sword or a gun in his belly. Joseph Rogers refused to assist him in bringing him away, so he could not bring him away with him. John Phillips went down to the mills to get more assistance, and when he came up again, Robert Huchin was gone. Until Tuesday, 22nd of December, Arthur Howland was given up and taken before Mr. John Alden, the magistrate. He was lodged in jail.[13][12]

On the same day on 22 December, John Howland, Jr. was summoned to appear at the court for giving intelligence to Arthur Howland and the Quaker with others met on the 19th of December on Lord's day.[14]

On 1 June 1658, John Howland became a freeman and was sworn in at the court of Plymouth Colony.

Death

The dates of death for either Lieut. John Howland, Jr. or his wife Mary are not known, and no probate records have been found. He died sometime after 18 Jun 1699 when he was admitted to membership in the West Parish Church of Barnstable.[15][16]

DNA

Confirmed DNA results through the Big Y-500 (original Big Y) test, Big Y-700 test, and Y Elite test reveal that his father, Henry Howland of Fenstanton's Haplogroup and SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) is R-A9703. All 11 unique SNPs are identified as A9702, A9703, A9704, A9706, A9707, A9708, FGC58199, FGC58202, FGC58206, FGC58207, and FGC58217 on the R-A9703 block level on the Y haplotree. All 11 SNPs passed through Henry Howland of Fenstanton to his sons; however, there are more unique SNPs that occurred through Arthur, John, and Henry Howland individually.

For example, two variants, A9705 and Z18598 are two unique SNPs that occurred later sometime after the migration to America, and belong to one patrilineal descendant of Pilgrim John Howland's son, Lieut. John Howland, Jr.[20] However, R-A9705 and R-Z18598 are not yet officially on the Y haplotree because it needs other Howland men from this patrilineal line to take the Big Y-700 test to confirm them. It will create a new subclade under the clade of R-A9703 in the future when one of the Howland patrilineal descendants who is descended from Pilgrim John Howland needs to take the Big Y-700 test.

Pilgrim John Howland's haplotree line is R-M269 >> R-U106 >> R-Z8 > R-Z1 > R-Z344 > R-Z6 > R-A96 > R-S10415 > R-A9701 > R-A9703.[21]

The more DNA tests can discover other SNPs unique to the patrilineal descendants to trace the Y-DNA to one of three Howland brothers in America. Recruiting additional Howlands for further SNP testing - anyone interested in submitting their Y-DNA. See more information at Howland (Y-DNA) under the Mayflower DNA project and Howland DNA project under Family Tree DNA.

Regarding the “ordering” of patrilineal descendant's unnamed SNPs, the only method we have of knowing the chronological order of SNPs is by discovering closer and closer matches. In the future, new Big Y-700 results will share some of the SNPs with seven individuals who already took the Big Y-700. At that point, we can further distinguish which of his patrilineal line's SNPs are older and which are younger.

I am concerned about the ancestry given for John Howland's wife Mary Lee. A string of poorly-sourced profiles traces her ancestry through the Atwood family to the ancient Grenville family, descended from Magna Carta barons. However, no Lees or Atwoods have been recognized as gateway ancestors, which makes me want to double-check Mary Lee's lineage carefully. In addition, Mary's paternal grandmother, currently given as Elizabeth Fletcher, shows a poorly-sourced ancient noble ancestry. Is there any documentation for this?
