Henry Stark Howland was born in Pawling, New York on August 2, 1824. He was the son of Jonathan Howland and Lydia Pearce.
Henry moved to Lambton Mills, Upper Canada in 1840, and acquired a grist mill, sawmill, and general store in Kleinburg, in Vaughan Township, Upper Canada by 1852. He served as reeve of Vaughan from 1859 to 1860, and again from 1864 to 1867.
In 1864, Henry sold his store and moved to Toronto, Upper Canada.
Henry was one of the co-founders of the Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1867, but resigned as vice-president in 1874. In 1873, he founded the Imperial Bank, which was renamed to the Imperial Bank of Canada in 1874. He was president of the Imperial Bank at the time of his death.
At the time of the 1881 Canada Census, Henry was married to Ardelia and had nine children living at home.[1] At the time of the census, his occupation was listed as "Merchant".
Henry died in Toronto on January 28, 1902, and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.[2]
