Biography
The 1850 U.S. Census identifies him with the suffix "Jr." At that time, such a suffix did not necessarily denote that a man was named for his father; it was simply used to differentiate between older and younger individuals with the same first and last names (sometimes with no blood relationship between them).
He was a farmer throughout his life. His burial was at Beulah Cemetery, Beulah, Hopkins County, Kentucky.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line.
Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line:
As noted elsewhere, usage of the "Jr." suffix differed in that time from the present. The preponderance of evidence points to David Howton and Elizabeth (nee Castleberry) Howton as James' parents.
