Biography

Henry was born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire in 1838. [1] He passed away in 1907.[2]


Hozier fought in the Second Chinese War in 1857, as well as the the Abyssinian War, thePrussian-Danish War in 1864, the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 ' Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871 as Assistant Military Attache, receiving the Iron Cross. He reached the rank of Colonel in the 3rd Dragoon Guards.

Hozier married first, Eleanor Elizabeth Lyon (b. abt 1850) daughter of James Lyon of Woolavington, Sussex on 6 August 1868. His second marriage was to Lady Blanche Henrietta Ogilvy (1852-1925) at Cortachy Castle, Angus Scotland on 28 Sep 1878.

Hozier resigned his commission and became Secretary of Lloyd's, his efficiency as an administrator facilitated an expansion of business and by the 1890's he had established 40 coastal signal stations in Britain and 118 overseas that were either controlled by or allied to Lloyd's, confirming the society as the centre of world shipping.

Colonel Henry Montague Hozier was created Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1897 and Knight Commander, Order of the Bath in 1903.

He died of Pyaemia, a form of Septicaemia in Panama and was buried there on 1 Mar 1907.
