Biography

Robert Thruston (not a typo, a family surname) Hubard was born on 26 Sep 1808. He was the son of Dr. James Thruston Hubard and his wife, Susan (Wilcox) Hubard.

On 16 Apr 1834, Robert married Susan (Bolling) Hubard in Buckingham County, Virginia. They were blessed with several children.

Robert owned more than one prosperous plantation, including land in Buckingham and Nelson Counties. Like many of his neighbors, he utilized slave labor. In 1860, one of his properties held more than 100 slaves. From November 1862 to January 1863, 7 of Robert's slaves were impressed by agents of the Confederate government and made to work on fortifications near Richmond, Virginia. Robert received $16 per month for the men's work and they each worked for 60 days. The slaves impressed during that period of time were Walker, Isaac, Archy [sic], William, George, Ben, and Solomon. From February to April 1864, more of Robert's slaves were impressed, working for $20 a month; Monroe worked for 64 days and John worked for 18 days.

Robert died on 19 Oct 1871, in Buckingham County, Virginia.
