Biography

Author and founder of the Church of Scientology.

He was born 11 MAR 1911 in Tilden, Madison, Nebraska to Henry August Wilson Hubbard and Ledora Waterbury. L. Ron ‘s family moved several times, his father was in the Army. As a young adult he continued to travel, spending time in Asia and Guam.

L. Ron Attended George Washington University for several years but did not graduate. He wrote many science fiction stories for magazines, and began working on a book, but earned little money.

He married Margaret Grubb in 1938, they had two children, Katherine and L Ronald Hubbard JR.

As America entered World War II, he enlisted in the Army. After two years he was hospitalized with an assortment of disorders and finally resigned his rank and was discharged.

In Los Angeles California In 1946, he met and married Sarah Northrup, the wife of one of his friends with whom he was living in a large house. He was accused of bigamy by Margaret Grubb Hubbard, as the divorce was not finalized. The second marriage lasted four years, ending in divorce, with one daughter.

In 1952 Hubbard married Mary Sue Whipp possibly in Phoenix, Arizona. They would have four children; Diana, Suzette, Arthur and Quentin, who died of an apparent suicide.

During the 1950s, Hubbard wrote several books based on his philosophy of Dianetics, which were best sellers. But still not having any funds, he eventually lost the copyrights to Dianetics. It was then that he took his same materials and came upon another philosophy, that of Scientology.

In the words of the Organization, Mary Sue then travelled with Ron to Phoenix, Arizona where they established the first organisation. Ron controlled the Office of L.Ron Hubbard, which was located at 1405 North Central Avenue in Phoenix Arizona. This became, in a few months, the Hubbard Association of Scientologists. [1]

With this winning idea and much more written material, he gained a following, His organization gained wealth and has centers in several countries.

Hubbard was reclusive for the latter part of his life, possibly living on one of several yachts owned by his organization. He was still married to Mary Whip, who outlived him.

He died in 1986 in San Louis Obisbo, California. [2]
