Biography

Birth: Dec. 28, 1927 Boulder Boulder County Colorado, USA Death: Dec. 1, 2008 Chico Butte County California, USA

The Reverend Lloyd G. Hubbard, an ordained minister and educator for more than 50 years, an alumnus of Northwest Nazarene College and Chico State, and a Marine veteran, passed away Dec.1st at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Marna and Mac Whitley. He is a child of God and went home to be with his heavenly Father.

Preceded in death by his parents George R. and Mary Morse Hubbard, he leaves beautiful memories behind for his wife Nita, brother John, sister Elizabeth Elftman, daughter and son-in-law Marna and Mac Whitley, daughter and son-in-law Paula and Dale Black, son Reynold, son and daughter-in-law Tim and Cheri Hubbard, 14 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

He also leaves behind a legacy of grace. The grace that God poured out through the gift of his Son, Jesus, was the theme of Lloyd's life. He passed that on to his children and grandchildren, and many others with whom he came into contact, from the man he met while serving the people of Los Angeles following the 1992 riots, to the widow who lived down the street. We are all forever grateful that God used him to love us so well.

Lloyd was a devoted husband, loving father, gracious minister, and passionate educator. He loved fishing and hunting and spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed college football where Boise State and the Colorado Buffaloes were his teams of choice.

He was born in Boulder, Colo., on Dec. 28, 1927. His family had a rich history there and signs of that family's impact on the community are visible to this day in buildings they helped construct and wells they excavated.

He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder following his high school graduation and majored in engineering before joining the Marine Corps in 1946. His relationship with Jesus Christ was renewed while he served our country and during that time He was called into ministry. That led to his enrollment in Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho, where he studied to be a minister.

Lloyd met and fell in love with the love of his life, Juanita "Nita" Webb at NNC. They were married at Lloyd's parents' home in Durango, Colo., on December 18, 1949.

Lloyd's two daughters, Marna and Paula, were born in Nampa before he graduated and was ordained as a minister in the Nazarene Church. His first church was in Newbridge, Ore. They moved on to Emmett, Idaho, where their son, Reynold, was born and Lloyd taught school. During summers, all through college and during these first jobs, Lloyd would run combines for the wheat harvest, pick fruit, and buck hay to make ends meet.

Lloyd was also a pastor at churches in Portland, OR., Fortuna, CA(where his son, Tim, was born), Wasco, CA. and Oxnard, CA. In 1966, he moved to Weiser, Idaho, to be near Nita's family and to teach school full-time.

Lloyd continued to pursue his passion for education and the church, teaching school in Willows, CA. and pastoring the Corning Church of the Nazarene. After six years, he and Nita moved to nearby Chico, CA., where he became the minister of Music at the Chico Nazarene Church and continued to teach in Willows full time. It was during this time he began vigorously pursuing a career in education.

He returned to school at Chico State and earned his Master's Degree in School Administration. He would spend most of the next 25 years serving the schools of Glenn County. He was the Vice-Principal at Murdock Elementary School in Willows, the Principal of Bayliss School, the county's Director of Special Education, and the Principal of Willows Intermediate School, before being elected Superintendent of Schools for Glenn County, where he served for 12 years before retiring.

During his tenure as Superintendent, he began Glenn County Superintendent forums, the Academic Decathlon, Historical School Site markers, the GATE program, the Home Study Program, Adult Education, the Opportunity Program, and the Glenn County Music Festival. He was recognized as Glenn County Administrator of the Year for 1991.

He was also very involved in the Association for California School Administrators and served as the president for Region 2.

After "retiring" as Glenn County Superintendent of Schools, he spent a year as the Principal/Superintendent of Elk Creek School District. He also served as the interim Chico Unified Schools Superintendent in 1997.

Lloyd also taught at Simpson College in Redding, CA. between 1991 and 1997 in the education department. He was the administrator for the Master's of School Administration Program. He taught several classes for the degree and placed and supervised candidates for the program.

In 1998, he and Nita relocated to Nampa, Idaho where many of their college friends and family were living. He became very involved with his son Tim's church and spent many hours with his family and friends.

Shortly before moving back to Idaho, Lloyd was diagnosed with the Parkinson's disease that would eventually take his life.
