Biography

George Hubbard, of Hartford and Middletown, Connecticut, was born about 1601; was married to Elizabeth Watts and died in 1685.

Birth

George was born about 1601.[1] In his will dated 2 May 1681, he states his age as about 80 years, making him born about 1601. He was probably born in England.

Barbour in the "Families of Early Hartford" states that he believes this George is the son of George and Mary of Wethersfield/Milford/Guilford.[1] That George was supposedly born about 1594 a mere seven years before George of Hartford/Middletown. In addition the older George, made no bequest to a child George in his will, even though the younger George outlived him by a couple of years.

Marriage

George married Elizabeth Watts[2]. She was the daughter of Richard Watts.[1][3] : Elizabeth & George O.C. 9th m 4th d 1668; Elizabeth & one of six children of G[ ] listed as covenanter Jan 21 1668; Elizabeth, Sr. & George, mem. full communion 7th mo. 9d 1676; excom. [4]

Death & Will

He died 18 March 1684/5, in Middletown, Connecticut.[5][3][1]

The inventory of George's estate was £243-10-00, taken 13 May, 1685. Legatees: the Widow, son Joseph age 42 years, Daniel 41, Samuel 37, Nathaniel 33, Richard 30, Mary (the wife of Thomas Ranny) 44, Elizabeth (the wife of Thomas Wetmore) 25 years of age.

His will dated 2 May, 1681 begins: "I George Hubbard of Middletown, being about 80 years of age, yet in comfortable health of bodie and having the use of my understanding as formerly, do make this my last Will & Testament:"[6]

Life Highlights

George's name is inscribed on the Founders Monument at Hartford where he resided as early as 1639, although he had no house lot at the time.[1] Single men usually lived with another family. He acquired land from Jeremy Adams in Feb 1639[7]

He sold his house lot in Hartford, and land on the east side of the Great River in or before 1650,[1][8] and he removed to Middletown[1], where he became a freeman in 1654[1][3][9], and his name is on the Founder's Rock at the Riverside Cemetery.

He was a founding member of the First Church of Middletown. George Sr. & wife, owned the covenant 9th m 4th d 1668, were admitted to communion 4-9-1668, were received as full communion members 7th m 9 d 1676. He died (no date).[4]

He was a large Land Owner[10] and is found with other family members on a 1673 list of Middletown Proprietors with their estate evaluations[11]: George Hubard 132:10; son Joseph Hubard 74:10; son Danll Hubard 36:00, son-in-laws: Thomas Wetmer 177:10 and Thamas Ranny 92:00 and the Widow Hubard 5:00 (Sarah (Kirby) Hubbard ?)

I believe the Find a grave memorial has the same wife, Elizabeth Watts. cc to Janne

I have not researched this person, however I have descendants down the line. Just wondering why Find A Grave has a different wife. Was he married twice?

See this image. What we're looking at is a copy of the originals made for organizational purposes (that doesn't mean they are inaccurate). Of course the dates we used are copies of copies of copies. anywasy the only thing I see very different here is the birth of George, which may be an editors addition, because I can't imagine George adding that when he recorded the births. I'd rather stick with the known sourced date, from his will

I was sent this information by another distant descendant of George (Cindy S) - it seems to be handwritten records from something called "Connecticut Marriages - 1640-1939) and has some confirming information as well as conflicting information for George.

There is a Thomas Hubbard-615 bpt 1657, attached as son of George and Elizabeth. He does fit nicely in the gap between Richard and Elizabeth. I have looked to find a legitimate record for Thomas. As far as I can tell there are none, however neither can I disprove him.
