Eliza Hubbard was born in Dorking towards the end of 1816, and christened on New Years Day 1817. [1] She was the daughter of Thomas Hubbard and Sarah Wright, one of twelve children. [2]
Of five surviving sisters, only Jane, the eldest, and Caroline, the youngest, married. Jane and Caroline, with their families, immigrated to Australia in 1853. Caroline returned home to London five years later and eventually emigrated to Connecticut. Jane and her family remained in Australia, settling in Eaglehawk near Bendigo.
In 1870, the unmarried Hubbard sisters Eliza, Harriet, and Sarah emigrated to Victoria together on the “Essex”, arriving in Port Philip in September 1870. Ship’s records put her age at 45. [3]
Eliza, Harriet and Sarah all settled in Victoria, with Sarah eventually marrying in 1877. Eliza lived at 18 Vincent Place, one of the homes belonging to Sarah’s husband. This is the home she passed away in 1888, aged 65.
She, Harriet, Sarah, and Jane are all buried in Melbourne General cemetery. [6]
