Biography

Jessica was born in 1915. She was the daughter of George Hubbard and Della McReady. She passed away in 1959.

Obituary refers to a marriage before Fink. A daughter was born of that marriage. A family photo has the name "Skabill." I have not found any

A letter ated Friday, April 24, 1959 written by her niece, Ferril (Constable) Klingensmith and detailing Jessie's death talks about her ex-husband"Dick Cahill" "Skabill" may be "Cahill".

This letter, written by Jessie's niece Ferril (Constable) Klingesmith, details Jessie's death. It is transcribed as written, spelling and punctuation as Ferril wrote. Anything in brackets is my clarification of persons mentioned:

"Friday April 24, 1959 Dear Doris & all, [I believe she is writing to her sister-in-law, Doris (Putnam) Constable, 1918-1993, married to her brother, Bernard Lee Constable, 1915-1968] Tho't I'd write yesterday, but here it is Friday evening. Glad to finally hear from you yesterday & get some of my questions answered. It's cool & cloudy here - supposed to get some showers tonite or tomorrow, certainly hope so as we've had almost none at all this winter. However, our apricot tree is loaded with fruit & had none last year. Be sure to send me Sharon Lee's [No idea who Sharon Lee is] address in your next letter. Jessie [Jessica Elizabeth (Hubbard) Fink, 1915-1959] and Art [Arthur L. Fink] wrote they were coming up on Easter Sunday & would we go to the desert on a picnic with them? But they didn't come as Ronnie, Art's boy who lives here in S.F., had a wkend job & didn't want to go to Torrance that wkend. (Art comes on Fri eve once-a-month & gets Ronnie & then brings him back on Sun. eve) So Ronnie phoned me & said they'd not be here so we looked for them the next Sunday; & I had Jessie on my mind all wk; but on Sunday morn we noticed Ronnie was at home. We didn't stop & inquire but knew J & Art wouldn't be up that wkend by Ronnie being at home - so I wondered so strongly about it that I phoned Ronnie on Mon nite, April 6th to ask - he said his Dad had phoned & said Jessie in hosp & they thought she had leukemia; so I wrote her a note & sent it to Hosp next day & asked Ronnie to let me know if he had heard anything else. The week went by & I phoned Ronnie again on Fri. & Sat & he had heard nothing at all - so naturally I didn't realize she was critical all this time. Sat eve. Ronnie's mother reached Art by phone at his mother's & reported back to me that she wasn't expected to live thru Sat nite, which came as a great shock to me; & that she could have no visitors; that's when I learned that her Bro. Georgie [George Edgar Hubbard 1880-1959] was here. Hazel [Hazel (Hubbard) Huntting 1902-1981] had been in Torrance all wk, but no one had bothered to phone me. I know & realize they were busy & upset, etc., so I forgive them. We decided to go on to San Diego on Sunday 12th as we'd planned so we did, & had a good visit with Vesta . I took a birthday cake & Gladys & family there for dinner. Ira up & about but "no account." [I don't know who Vesta, Gladys or Ira are.] Sun nite about 10 p.m. Art phoned me & said Jessie was lots better & I could come down & see her on Monday - also talked with Georgie {Jessie's brother George] as he left for home next day. We thot we'd go on Wed. afternoon when Arnold [Ferril's husband, John Arnold Klingensmith, 1918-1998] had half-day off, but Tuesday noon Art called and said she died at 11 a.m. She planned her own funeral with her minister & the mortician & realized she was going to die before anyone knew it for sure. She became extremely tired about April 2nd & had knots come out around her neck, so was alarmed & went to Dr - who rushed her to Torrance Hospital; then transferred her to County Hosp in a day or so, which was right there in Torrance; they called in Drs from City of Hope & did lots of tests & gave her blood; but she was destroyed by leukemia & cancer; & she hoped to go soon; she was clear & conscious to the end, so Hazel told me - but she was so horribly swollen that she didn't look like herself at all, with a look of anguish & pain on her face. There were lots of flowers & many friends as she was dearly loved by all the church people & had lots of friends in Torrance. Her ex-husband Dick Cahill was at funeral with his wife & Art's ex-wife sat with the family during services. Dick was really torn apart with grief. Funeral service was nice - she had requested "His Eye is on the Sparrow" which was done as a solo by a Lady from the church choir; she sang another solo, too; had a beautiful voice. Margie & husband & Art [this has been an on-going mystery. I think that the photos I have marked "Margie Caramargo" are Jessie's daughter, but haven't been able to go beyond that.] went on train with the body to Montana on Fri afternoon at 4 p.m. I understand she wanted to be buried there as her mother is there. [she and her mother, Della Fleet (McReady) Hubbard are buried in Joliet Cemetery, Joliet, Carbon County, Montana] She had been tired for quite awhile as there was no marrow in her bones. So she suffered only 10 days. No obituary was read at the funeral at all. Jessie had gained weight the past 2 or 3 years and was fairly gray and looked so very much like Mom. [I don't know who Ferril is referring to here as "Mom"] Sorry your job hasn't been more satisfactory, but hope you find something better. Aren't there several big markets in Mexico? Isn't it larger than Trenton? Mildred Evans [Mildred Myra (Sandlin) Evans, 1911-1999, daughter of Emma (Hubbard) Willis] wrote me that she'd just had a cyst removed from her breast but wasn't malignant. Frank Caldwell [husband of Osa Mabel (Sandlin) Caldwell, sister to Mildred Evans] is coming to San Francisco to stay in about 2 wks while Mabel goes to Missouri, as I understand it. Dad Klingensmith [ presumably Arnold's father, John Edwin Klingensmith] is fairly well - we all seem to think he hasn't looked very well at times lately but he still holds a job as a guard not far from here & works 12-hr shift 5 nites a week. Erson & Bobbie [no idea] ok & James & Alberta [again, no idea] will have their 3d baby in July. So glad Darleen [this must be her brother Bernard Constable's daughter Darleen (Constable) Cummings] got to come home for a few days. Seems to me she should give up some of that overtime work & rest more before her health breaks. No, we haven't seen nor heard of the Horns [there are a number of Horns in the family line, but I don't know who this refers to.] since I last mentioned it; as has been a long time since they were here - only once since last Aug or September. They are all too busy making money. Let us hear from you again soon. Love, Ferril"
