Biography

Joseph was born in 1836. He was the son of William Hubbell and Charity Harris. He passed away in 1921.

Joseph first enlisted as a private on 28 June 1861 in Company I of the 19th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers knowns as the "Iron Brigade" and was discharged on 10 December 1861 because he had caught a severe cold. He again enlisted on 26 March 1862 as a private in the 13th Battery of the Indiana Volunteers of Light Artillery and was honorably discharged on 10 July 1865. At the time of his enlistment, Joseph was 5 feet 5 1/2 inches tall, had light complexion, gray eyes, sandy hair and was a boatman by occupation. On 8 October 1862 Joseph was shot in the left leg just under the knee at Perryville, Boyle County, Kentucky. [Pension File #91016 & WC910851]

He and his family left Indiana about 18 October 1866 and went to Marshaltown, Marshall County, Iowa, and by 1868 they were in Grundy County, Iowa. About 15 December 1869 Joseph moved his family to Greenwood County, Kansas, then to Howard County, Kansas where he and his brother Oliver were found on the 1870 census.

Joseph was on the 1870 Liberty Township, PO Elk City, Howard (now Elk) County, Kansas Census [p 261b, enumerated 25 June 1870] aged 33 IN, farmer, PP $1500; along with wife Mary C., 23 IN; sons Ulysess, 4 IN; daughters Florance, 2 IA; and Mary E., 1/12 b Apr KS.

By 1873 Joseph and his family were in Cowley County, Kansas. Joseph was on the 1880 Salt Springs Township, Greenwood County, Kansas Census [p 365d, ED 99, enumerated 26 June 1880] aged 44 IN OH NJ, farmer; along with wife Mary C., 36 IN IN IN; son Ulysus, 14 IN IN IN; daughters Florence, 12 IN IN IN; Mary E., 10 KS IN IN; son Samuel, 7 KS IN IN; daughter Sarah J., 4 KS IN IN IN; and nephew Alfred Hubbell, 20 IL IN IN, laborer. By 1884 were back in Elk County, Kansas.

Joseph and his family left Kansas in August 1887 [his memory failed and he probably meant 1886] and went to Balfour, McHenry County, North Dakota, where on 16 February 1887 he filed for his Civil War Pension. [File #91016 & WC910851] He received a gunshot wound in the shoulder on 18 September 1863 at the battle at Gallatin, Tennessee in 1863 which also caused him to get rheumatism.

Joseph was in Hubbard County, Minnesota in August 1895. There he was injuried on 27 July 1899 when a tree fell on him and broke his left shoulder. This happened while he was "grubbing" a road and a team of mules pulled down a tree when another tree leaning on the first one fell on him. After that incident, he moved to Kootenai County, Idaho and stayed until July 1900.

Joseph was on the 1900 North Side Precinct, Kootenai County, Idaho Census [p 444b, ED 65, enumerated 25 June 1900] aged 65 IN OH Eng, b Sep 1834, married 37 years, farmer, rented farm on Farm Schedule #69; along with wife Mary C., 56 IN NC KY, married 37 years, had 6 still living children.

In July 1900 Joseph and Mary went to Madison County, Iowa, but by April 1901 they was back in McHenry County, North Dakota. On 11 February 1904 Joseph's Post Office was at Caughey, McHenry County, North Dakota. They again moved in November 1908 to Red Bluff, Tehama County, California, where, on 17 October 1911 Joseph filed for an increase of his pension to $20.00 and another pension increase on 21 May 1912. By 1 July 1915 they were living in Jamestown, probably Johnson County, Arkansas.

Joseph was on the 1910 Red Bluff Township, Tehama County, California Census [p 168a, ED 128, enumerated 12 May 1910] aged 74 IN IN IN, first marriage of 47 years, farmer, owned mortgage free farm, on Farm Schedule #185; along with wife Mary C., 64 IN IN IN, first marriage of 47 years, had 6 still living children.

Joseph was not found on the 1920 census indexes.
