Richard was born into a prominent merchant family in Newfield (now Bridgeport) Connecticut. He was in the merchant business with his father, also named Richard, and his brother Amos. Their business involve trade with the West Indies. A number of Hubbells in this extended family were merchants or sea captains.
During the revolutionary War , the Hubbell family provided supplies and support to revolutionary forces including General Washington. Richard was paid in Continental Money after the war, and as you might imagine, a whole boat load of this type of money was soon worth next to nothing.
Richard, who married Roxanna Burritt, came from a long line of Richards, and his own son is referred to as Richard the fifth. That son was lost at sea.
A small biographical sketch of this Richard can be found in "The History of the Hubbell Family" p. 81.
