Biography

This profile is part of the Hoover Name Study.
Swiss flag
Hans Huber is of Swiss descent
Hans Huber has German Roots.

NB : This profile is the result of a merge of two other profiles, and appears to have conflated two different men. One of them was the Mennonite immigrant, Hans Huber who died in Earl Twp, Lancaster, leaving a widow (Margarethe) and six children (Jacob, Catherina, Magdalena, Margaretha, Christiana and Anna). There is no evidence to indicate that he was the father of Hans Heinrich b.1687, Barbara b.1692, Hanseli b.1696, or Johann Georg b.1700.

Birth : Hans is reported to have been born in Switzerland between about 1670 and 1675.[1] His birthdate is variously reported to be 1670 in Switzerland [2] or 1663 [3] or 1676 in Hausen am Albis, Zürich, Switzerland (from an unsourced earlier profile). Evidence is sought to clarify.

Marriage and children : Some sources [3] suggest that Hans married Barbel Lier, but this is disputed (see notes). Other sources [1] give that Hans married Margaret Koch in Switzerland. They had children :

  1. Jacob [1][4]
  2. Catherina [1][4]
  3. Magdalena [1][4]
  4. Margarethe [1][4]
  5. Christiana [1][4]
  6. Anna [1][4]

The family is reported to have fled religious persecution in Switzerland, and to have spent some time in Strasburg, Germany, before emigrating to Pennsylvania. [1]

Immigration to Pennsylvania : Hans is variously reported to have arrived in Pennsylvania "between 1710 and 1715" [1], in 1710 aboard the Mary Hope [2] or 1717. [5] The Hoover genealogy records that the family stopped first at Strasburg, PA, before Hans took up land at Mill Creek (surveyed in 1721 and patented in 1735). [1] An earlier unsourced version of the profile recorded that he lived in New Holland, Lancaster, PA.

Death : Hans is reported to have died in 1750 and to be buried in the Groffdale Mennonite Brick Church Cemetery. The grave marker is not original, but was erected by descendants in 1928 and reads :

Hans Huber, an early settler in Earl Township west of New Holland where he and his wife Margaret, Swiss Mennonites, took up 200 acres of land in A.D. 1717. Also in memory of his grandsons, John Huber 1723-1791, his wife Margaret, and Martin Huber 1725-1785, his wife Magdalene. This marker was erected in 1928. [2]

Will : The will of Hans Hoober of Erle Township in the county of Lancaster was made on 17 Feb 1745/6 and proven on 23 Oct 1750. The will provides for Hans's beloved wife, Margaretha and his six children, named as Jacob, Catherine, Magdalena, Margaretha, Christiana, and Anna (deceased, the mother of an unknown number of children). Hans's will also names his wife's sister's children living in "Germania" - Valentin Borg, Margareth Borg - and leaves a bequest to "the poor of the people called Mennonists" in Pennsylvania and in Germania "called in high Dutch the Ubersheimerhoff". [4] (Ubersheimerhoff was a contemporary name for the town of Ibersheim, in the German Palatinate. [6] )

Notes

Barbel Lier as wife of Hans Huber - this suggestion appears to have come from the work of Jane Evans Best [3] and is disputed :

  • FamilySearch identifies baptisms for two children of Hanss Huber and Barbara Lier in Hausen, Switzerland : these are Hanns (1696) and Hans Jageli (1700). However, Hans Huber named only one son - Jacob - in his will. It's possible the child born in 1696 died, but this is the first caution to keep in mind. Also, these are baptisms in a Catholic Church, and we're dealing with a Mennonite family; perhaps they went along with the baptism in an attempt to avoid persecution, but it's a second caution to keep in mind.
  • [Response to the above] FamilySearch is not a primary source. Jane Evans Best's sources are described as documents sent from the cantonal archives (staatsarchiv) in Zurich by Erika Rübel-Kern, historian of Näf and Huber families of Zurich. Best writes: "Hans Huber (HR244) was baptized September 7, 1663, at Hausen, a son of Hans Jacob Huber and Barbara Baumann of Wesenmatt, Hausen. 3 On September 2, 1685, he married Barbara Lier (LR29), who was a granddaughter of Elsbeth Naf (probably NF132). I believe he is the Hans Huber who had 200 acres in Earl Township, Lancaster County, surveyed on June 23, 1721, and whose will was proved there on October 25, 1750.4 Their son, Hans Jacob Huber (HR2445), was baptized September 5, 1700, at Hausen. The family lived at Wesenmatt in 1696, in the town of Hausen in 1700, and was not included in the 1710 census of Hausen." It is of utmost importance to notice that this family was missing after 1700, which is after the legally required baptism of Jacob and about the time Hans's first wife Barbara Lier died. They likely were in Alsace with other Mennonites seeking refuge, and likely moved into the German palatinate as Strasbourg began evicting radical pietists, at least by 1705. Martin Kendig who held the warrant for the land that Hans Huber was the son of Elsbeth Meili, who was of Alsace at some point (perhaps born there) and great-great grandaguther of Kathrina Huber who married Hans Bär of Hausen am Albis, making Hans Huber of Hausen the 3rd cousin of Martin Kendig, from whom he acquired his land in Earl. There are not just two children recorded as born to Hans Huber and Barbel Lier, but there are Anna Huber, bap. 21 Feb 1686, who survived and married in Lancaster County, Hans Heinrich, bp. 11 Dec 1687, Barbara bap. 1 Jan 1692, Hanseli bap. 17 May 1696 and the last, Jacob, bap. 5 Sep 1700. Children of Hans' second wife were Catherina, Magdalena, Margaretha, Christiana. If his first son, Hans Heinrich, perhaps named after his brother, died as a child, and not named in his will, then who is the Hans Heinrich Huber bap 1695 in Hausen who took up land adjacent to other Hubers in Martic, who is called by Jacob Hoover of Martick (only surviving son of Hans) "my loving friend Henry Hoover"? Very likely he is son of Hans Heinrich of HAusen, cousin of Hanseli. This Hans Heinrich, baptized May 1661 sponsored by Hans Heinrich LYER of Kappel... and was living September 1692 in Alsace.
  • A Hanss Huber and his wife are recorded amongst a group of Mennonites who left the Palatinate in 1693 to spend 5 years in Friederichstadt, in the Netherlands.[7] If this were Hans of Earl Twp, then he certainly could not have been the father of the child baptised in Hausen in 1696, and he thus was not the husband of Barbara Lier. (It's worth noting that at least some of the people in this group had come from Ibersheimhof, and Hans of Earl Twp left a bequest to the poor Mennonites of Ibersheimhof in his will.) Daughter Anna, and Son Jacob from first wife Barbara Lier match those children in Hans's will of Lancaster County.
  • Hans of Earl Twp had a daughter named Margarethe, but he did not have a daughter named Barbara. Perhaps he did have a daughter named Barbara, and she died before he wrote his will ... but we're now having to explain away a lot of conflicts.
  • Best's work has been shown to be hypothetical only, and should not be assumed to be correct where conflicting evidence is available. [8]

Miscellaneous other notes :

  • Most other trees show this person as Gregor Jonas : [this is a reference to a merged profile which probably should not have proceeded]
  • This profile is the result of a merge of Hans Ulrich and Hans Andrew
  • Davis Vol. 3 Page 155-159 speculates that Hans Ulrich Huber (#479) and Hans "Hanseli" Huber (#341) are nephew and uncle respectively. Many question seem to exist as to his correct parents. Dispute among sources.
