WHAT RECORDED RECORDS TELL US ABOUT THOMAS HUCKABY-312

I also have read the "History Sketch of the Huckaby Family." Recorded records prove and disprove some of the issues listed in History Sketches. I believe that Mr. H. C. Huckaby had someone's old bible or records when he wrote about the Huckaby family. The dates of birth and marriages for the children of Thomas Huckaby-312 match close to what can be proven by recorded records.

If Thomas Huckaby-313 is the father of Thomas Huckaby-312, then Thomas Huckaby-312 was not born in England in 1745, and he did not come to Virginia in 1765. However, from the recorded records of Thomas Huckaby-313, his father, we know Thomas Huckaby-312 was born in Goochland County, Virginia.

We find in the Cumberland Couty, Virginia, Deed Book 4, and LDS Film Number 0030746, page 185. On June 19, 1767, John Chaffin gave his grandson, Thomas Huckaby-312, one parcel of land containing one hundred and thirty acres more or less in the County of Cumberland in Virginia. This was the tract of land and plantation where Thomas Huckaby-313 and Nancy Caroline Chaffin Huckaby, his parents, formerly lived. Then in the same Deed book and same LDS Film Number pages 299 and 300, we read. On October 19, 1768, Thomas Huckaby-312 sold sixty-five acres of the land given him by John Chaffin in Cumberland County, Virginia, to a Mr. Simon Chalpin for twenty-five pounds. Thomas Huckaby-312 to be deeded land in 1767 and then sell some in 1768 would need to be twenty-one years of age or older. Since this is the first recorded record of Thomas Huckaby-312 where a date can be set, twenty-one years from 1767 make before 1745 seem like a reasonable birth date for Thomas. I do not believe the sketch about Thomas clearing land and planting corn. John Chaffin, Thomas Huckaby-312's grandfather, held over 1300 acres of land in Cumberland and Goochland Counties, Virginia. John gave Thomas Huckaby-312 that Thomas Huckaby Sen and his family had lived and farmed for years. That is my take on the issue. No recorded records to support the facts

We find in Cumberland County, Virginia, Deed Book No. 4, and LDS Film Number 0030746 pages 324 and 325. On March 04, 1769, Thomas Huckaby-312 and Simon Chalpin sold one hundred and thirty acres of land in Cumberland County, Virginia, to a Mr. James Doss for the sum of fifty pounds. I do not get the connection between the two land deeds. In 1768, Thomas Huckaby-312 sold half of his land, sixty-five acres, to Mr. Simon Chalpin. Less than a year later, in 1769, Thomas Huckaby-312 and Simon Chalpin sell one hundred and thirty acres, the amount given Thomas by his grandfather John Chaffin to Mr. James Doss for fifty pounds,

In Bedford County, Virginia Deed Book 5---1773--1778 LDS Film Number 0030555 page 182, we learn that on October 24, 1772, Simon Chaffin of Bedford County, Virginia, sold a parcel of land to Thomas Huckaby-312 of Cumberland County, Virginia. The plot of two hundred and twenty-five acres more or less was in Bedford County, Virginia, on Elk Creek. The cost for the land was a sum of twenty pounds. Court held for Bedford County, Virginia, January 25, 1773, this indenture and memorandum of livery of as sworn when on indorsed were proven by the oaths of Jonathan Cardiff and Joshua Huckaby. Court held for the said County the twenty-eight day of February 1774 the same was further confirmed by Ambrose Meador's commitment and ordered to be recorded.

Thomas-312 of Bedford County, Virginia sell one hundred acres on Elk Creek to William Mesders for twelve pounds on January 21, 1777. Deed recorded on page 482 in the Bedford County, Virginia Deed Book number 5.

On February 23, 1795, Thomas Huckaby-312 of Bedford County, Virginia, bought twenty acres on Elk Creek for two pounds from Joseph Wright and his wife, Elizabeth Wright. The Deed can be found in Bedford County, Virginia Deed Book No. 9 (1791 - 1795) and on LDS Film Number 0030557, page 510.

On April 28, 1795, Thomas Huckaby-312 of Bedford County, Virginia, bought seventy-five acres in Bedford County, Virginia, on Elk Creek. Thomas paid Mr. Richard Smith of Campbell County and Nathaniel Tate of Bedford County, Virginia, forty pounds for the parcel of land. The Deed can be found in Bedford County, Virginia, in Deed Book No. 9 (1791 - 1795) and on LDS Film Number, 0030557, page 510.

Thomas Huckaby-312 and Kesiah, his wife of the County of Bedford, sold a tract of land containing 220 acres on both sides of Elk Creek lying and being in the County of Bedford to Jeremiah Hilton. This is the last recorded record I found for Thomas Huckaby-312. I did not follow him past Bedford County, Virginia, but I saw a document that said Thomas Huckaby-312 was on the Barren County, Kentucky, 1820 census records.

Thomas Huckaby-312 did not fight in the Revolutionary War. Ms. Mary Ostoj requested information on Thomas Huckaby-312 war service from the Bedford City/County Museum, Bedford, Virginia. Ms. Ostoj received an answer from Ellen Wandrei, Director, dated September 18, 1993. The letter said, " You asked for verification that Thomas Huckaby fought in the Revolutionary War from Virginia for four years, but unfortunately, we have been unable to locate any record in our library or the courthouse."

The Thomas Huckaby that fought in the Revolutionary War was the son of Richard Huckaby and Mary Fellows. He was born before 1745 in Brunswick County, Virginia. Thomas Huckaby was living in the Saint David Parish in the Pee Dee area, Cheraw's District, South Carolina, in 1759. He was on the Cherokee Expedition in 1759, during the French and Indian War. Source: "GREGG" page 409 During the Revolutionary War, Thomas Huckaby served in the Militia during 1782 as a Private in "MARION'S BRIGADE. In a stub entry to Indents Claims against South Carolina growing out of the War. In the Revolution Book L - N N451, an issue was made April 11, 1785, to Thomas Huckaby for five pounds sterling, 70 days duty done in the Militia in 1782.

Another, Thomas Huckaby, the son of James Huckaby and Mary Fellows, born in Prince George County, Virginia, paid a substitute to serve for him during the Revolutionary War. Thomas Huckaby was living in Franklin County, North Carolina, in September 1781, where we find this statement. "I THEN RETURNED TO FRANKLIN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, AND IN SEPTEMBER 1781, I BECAME A SUBSTITUTE FOR THOMAS HUCKABY UNDER CAPTAIN JENKINS DEVANEY, LIEUT. WILLIAM RUSH, ENSIGN JOHN MOSLEY IN THE SECOND REGIMENT OF THE NORTH CAROLINA MILITIA" Page 4 Statement of Joshua Richard, pension number S, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files; North Carolina, NARA M804.

History Sketch of the Huckaby Family

I have found two different version's of the Huckaby sketch written by H. C. Huckaby, Huckaby, MO during the 1920's. Apparently many of the dates in the sketch were taken from Thomas Huckaby's English bible which had been in the family for about 145 years when H. C. "Henry Clay" Huckaby wrote the sketch. On July 27, 1971, Newell & Joyce Huckaby visited Bolivar, MO and was told by Bertie Huckaby that the old English bible is believed to have been lost in a fire although one of the sketch's states the bible is now in the possession of Rev. Henry C. Huckaby, a great grandson during the 1920's. Bertie showed them an article published in in the "Bolivar Herald Press" but she was unable to find a date on it. It was thought to have been published during the 1920's.

Also, in the sketch Thomas Huckaby is reported to have served four years in the War with Great Britain which began in 1775. I have requested Thomas' Revolutionary War military record three different times from the National Archives and those records have never been located. Thomas didn't even attempt to draw a pension because I believe he died too early (1821). The act for soldiers of that War to receive pensions was not approved until after he died. He may have served in the Virginia Militia and many militia fighters were not recorded or may have been destroyed in the many courthouse fires in Virginia. This is all speculation, of course. I did find one record of a Private Thomas Huckaby serving in the Revolutionary War 1782 in the Old Kershaw Records, page 409. Not sure if this is our Thomas Huckaby or not. There were 2 other Huckaby's who served and those names were Isham & Samuel Huckaby also in 1782.

From the "History Sketch of Huckaby Family"

Thos. Huckaby was born in England in 1745, came to Virginia in 1765, married on June 22, 1772, he then moved to Bedford Co., VA. (One version of the sketch states "I imagine the ship from England came to harbor at Norfol, most of them did at that time") Served four years in the War with Great Britian which began in 1775. He took up 150 acres of land in Bedford Co., VA. He cleared out three acres of branch bottom land then dug holes four feet apart and one foot square and planted corn in each corner of the hole. It was cultivated by digging the ground with a matix. He had no horse and only one cow. Later on he sowed wheat and cut it with a reaphook and thrashed it with a pole.

There were eight children as follows:

John Huckaby was born May 17, 1775, the first Huckaby born on American soil, he moved from VA to Barren Co., KY, raised a family and died, but we have no record of his family.

Bettie Huckaby was born December 11, 1777, no record of her.

Mollie Huckaby was born Jul 6, 1779. She married Jessie Bewley. They lived and died in Barren Co., KY (another version "Jessie Brewley, the grandfather of Jess Brewley of Bolivar, MO. They were Baptist in Religion and Democrats in politics.")

(Another version includes "On his way home on foot, he became so hungry that he traded a new home made jeans? vest to Indians for 2 loaves of corn bread.") The family belonged to the Concord Baptist Church in Barren Co., KY. (On version includes "He was a Jackson Democrat unitl death.") Joseph first married a woman by the name of Bridges.

The 24 children described above were Joseph Huckaby's besides raising 2 step children. He moved to Polk Co., MO in 1857. (One version includes "they joined the church in Hopewell") Some of these dates were taken from our Great Grandfather Thomas Huckaby's English Bible which has been in the family about 145 years". (One version states "the bible is now in the possession of Reverend Henry C. Huckaby, a great grandson.") Written by H. C. Huckaby, huckaby, MO"
