Biography

Thomas was born about 1732. He is the son of James Huckaby and Mary Fellows. [1] Thomas Huckaby was in Bute Co, NC with his presumed father James and James' other sons James junior, Samuel and John where the family members engaged in land transactions among each other. Some researchers believe the Thomas Huckaby in the 1790 Cheraw District, Marlboro Co, SC census at the same time as Charles, the son of Richard Huckaby, was the son of James and Mary Huckaby, although there is no proof of the latter relationship.

Records indicated Thomas, son of James and Mary Huckaby, remained in Granville, Bute and Franklin counties in North Carolina until about 1784 when Thomas Huckaby and William McGregor moved to Montgomery Co, NC.

Thomas Huckaby was on the Granville Co, NC 1769 Tax List as one white with his brother Samuel Huckaby. [2] On 23 Feb 1765 Thomas Huckaby was one of the witnesses to a deed between _____ Beckham and Simon Beckham.[3]

William Russell and Sarah Russell of Bute Co sold Thomas Huckaby of Bute County on 26 Jul 1770 for 25 pounds Virginia money 150 acres in Bute County, part of a 6 Feb 1762 Earl Granville grant. A marginal notation on 12 Feb 1772 noted the deed was delivered to Thomas Huckaby. [4]A deed from William Russell and Sarah Russell to Thomas Huckaby was proved by the oath of Benjamin Ward in court on 13 Nov 1772.

Thomas, John and James Huckaby were included in the 1771 Bute Co, NC Tax List along with William McGregor, Moses Curtis, Drury and John Christian, Green Hill, John and William Solomon, James Stiles and Thomas and William Webb.[5]

Bute County was created from Granville Co, NC.

The next was a record very much out of character with the future successful life of Thomas. On 4 May 1774 a Thomas Huccaby, infirm, was recommended for exemption from taxes; there was no record of approval. Although this could be Thomas, there is a possiblility the author incorrectly transcribed the name and this was Thomas' father James. [6]

Thomas Huckaby sold James Huckaby, both of Bute Co, NC, for 50 pounds Virginia money 15 acres in Bute Co on 2 Nov 1774.[7] The deed from Thomas Huckaby to James Huckaby was proved by the oath of Benjamin Seawell on 9 Nov 1774 in court. William McGregor purchased 150 acres adjoining the land of Thomas Huckabee on 10 Oct 1775, and in Nov 1775 McGregor purchased an additional 50 acres of land, also adjoining Thomas Huckabee. A deed from Thomas Huckaby to William Smith was proved in court on 14 Feb 1776. John Huckaby acknowledged a deed to Thomas Huckaby, and on motion, the same was ordered to be registered on 12 Feb 1777. Thomas Huckaby sold John Lett Cook, both of Bute County, NC for 200 pounds current money 200 acres in Bute County down Beckhams Pigpen Branch to Jiles Creek on 13 Jan 1778.[8]

On 9 Feb 1778 Thomas Huckaby acknowledged a deed to John Leacock and William Roland acknowledged a deed to Thomas Huckaby in court. On 12 Dec 1778 William Rowland sold Thomas Huckaby, both of Bute Co, NC for 250 pounds current money 156 acres in Bute County on the south side Giles Creek up Rocky Branch from where it crosses. The land was adjacent to the creek and to the land of Brantley. [9]

On 29 Aug 1780 Thomas Huckaby of Franklin Co, NC was buying and selling land in Franklin County. Franklin County was created from Bute County, NC.

"I then returned to Franklin Co, NC and in Sep 1781 I became a substitute For Thomas Huckaby under Captain Jenkins Devaney, Lieut. William Rush and Ensign John Mosley in the Second Regiment of the North Carolina Militia."[10]

Moses Bledsoe of Franklin Co, NC sold John Huckaby of same on 22 Apr 1783 for 500 pounds current money a tract of 100 acres on Lyons Creek adjoining Thomas Huckaby.

William McGregor, Bartlett McGregor and Thomas Huckaby were on the 1790 Montgomery Co, NC census. In addition to himself Thomas Huckaby's household had 4 males under 16 and 4 females. If the males were his sons, one could have been John Huckaby who married Eva McGregor which means John could has been born about 1790.

On 9 Jan 1781 Thomas Durham and Thomas Huckaby entered 10 acres on the south side of the Yadkin River at Little Falls above Duckert's Fall and the place well known as Big Cedar Falls, bordering the lands of Duckery and Earl.[11] On 7 Sep 1792 Charles Lewis entered 50 acres bordering Thomas Huckaby and Bartlett McGregor. (Montgomery Co, NC Land Entry No. 813) On 17 Feb 1794 William McGregor entered 150 acres on Cedar Branch of Mountain Creek bordering Thomas Huckaby and 50 acres on the west side of the Yadkin River at the Big Falls, bordering Thomas Huckaby. Thank you for the information. This estate inventory 1716 Prince George County, Virginia belongs to Thomas Huckaby-983. The last recorded record I have for him is 1695 when he was still jailer in Charles City, and I have his death listed as after 1695. Now I can give him a more correct date. Thank again for your help.

I found a record for a Thomas Huckaby' estate inventory 1716 Prince Geroge County Virginia. So this Thomas either died that year or the year before. Who was he? John Denton and a Randell Hall was incharge of getting this inventory.

Teresa, thank you for editing the Biography of Thomas Huckaby-807. Samuel Huckaby and Mary Ann Huckaby are the only two children that recorded records prove they are James and Mary Fellows Huckaby children. Early researchers presumed that James and Mary Fellows Huckaby has other children named Charles, Thomas, James, and John that was listed in the "Bristal Parish Register, Henrico, Prince George, and Dinwiddie Counties Virginia. I was never able to find proof of this in the Register, but recorded records indicate there may be some proof they were children of James and Mary Fellows Huckaby, which I will covered in the Biography of James Huckaby-781.

Thank you for the way you covered what seem like Thomas Huckaby's infirm request for exemption from paying taxes. I looked for other Thomas Huckaby in that area and time frame but found no one other than Thomas Huckaby-807.

There is one request that I will ask is that the last sentence in parg. one of the Biography of Thomas Huckaby-807 be removed or rewritten to convey my intent that " SOME RESEARCHERS BELIEVE THE PRESUMED SONS THOMAS AND CHARLES HUCKABY OF JAMES AND MARY FELLOWS HUCKABY ARE THE THOMAS AND CHARLES HUCKABY FOUND IN THE 1790 CENSUS RECORDS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, RECORDED RECORDS DO NOT SUPPORT THAT TO BE TRUE. RECORDED RECORDS INDICATEED THE PRESUMED SONS THOMAS AND CHARLES HUCKABY OF RICHARD HUCKABY WERE IN SOUTH CAROLINA AS EARLY AS 1759, WHILE THE PRESUMED SONS OF JAMES HUCKABY-781 WERE STILL IN HALIFAX, BUTE, OR FRANKLIN COUNTIES OF NORTH CAROLINA. Thank again for your help.
