James was a member of the Home Guard of the Cumberland County PA Militia. He is shown in the "History of the Juniata [River] Valley as a "new arrival" in present Juniata County for the year 1771. In 1796 he sold his land there to his son-in-law, William Hudelson, who then sold the land the following day. James's name is spelled three ways in the Indenture, and signed by mark as "James Heddleston." Also in 1796, James bought land along the banks of Hinkston Creek, Bourbon County, KY. His family were members of the Presbyterian Church in PA, but no records for the Millersburg Presbyterian Church containing his name have been found. His grave is unlocated.
