The story goes that Willis and Polly were bushwhacked (shot and killed) on their front porch 12 December 1862, assumedly with their children present (this has been explained to me to mean that certain confederates took offense to Willis putting in with the Union. He had been born in Tennessee, but was living in Missouri with his family. At least one of his brothers fought for the Confederacy, remaining in Tennessee). Their children went to live with one of Willis' brothers' family after their deaths. As one can see, Willis and Polly's death dates are the same. If anyone out there knows more about the event, please share. Interestingly, his brother Wiley who fought on the CSA side in Tennessee.. was buried in a TN graveyard that was intended mostly for slaves, to keep his grave from being tampered with after the war (I saw a note about this somewhere). It is currently not known where Willis and Polly are buried (anyone who has info on this, please contact me or share it here).
