Notes

Note N6William and Sarah Hudson lived near Gravel Hill Methodist Church in
Roan
County, Tennessee about three miles from Clinch River. At one time
they
had lived in Anderson County. (ancil Hudson, their son, on his
application
for a civil war pension stated that he was born in Anderson County.
In their life time there was a ferry called Williams Ferry which
crossed
Clinch River near the present Melton Hill Dam Locks. This ferry
connected
Williams Ferry Road on the Lenoir City side of the river with the road
leading to the Gravel Hill Church and on to Wheat, Tennessee.
They are both buried in Gravel Hill Church Cemetery which was, in
1965, in
the restricted area of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. For years little wooden
sheds
with a picket fence around them were maintained at their graves. Some
of
their Great grand children can remember these sheds. Among them are
Amy
Williams Coley and Mattie Hudson of Lenoir City, Tennessee and Joe H.
Hudson of Loudon, Tennessee.
Ann Williams Coley remembers going going with her mother, Frances
Hudson
Williams, to put flowers on their graves and her telling Ann they were
decorating her (Frances') grandfather's and Grandmother's graves.
There
were only four or five graves in this cemetery.
There is a plain grave marker in the Gravel Hill Cemetery that bears
the
inscription "MBH - Died in October". (This information about the
markler
was obtained from Mr. W. E. Pennell who supervises cemetery
maintenance
for Management Services, Inc., P.O. Box B, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. ) He
said
the walls of the old log church were still standing in 1965. (?We)
tried
to visit the cemetery on September 28, 1965, but they had two
unsheilded
reactors working in the area so of course we could not go in to the
area.
