Walter's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1852 in the Richmond Union Yorkshire district.[1]
Walter's parents, Henry Courtley Hudson and Emma Young, died when he was very young and, though his extended family tried to look after him and his siblings during hard times, he was sent to live at the workhouse in Low Street, New Malton, Yorkshire.
In the 1861 census Walter (age 10) was the inmate of the workhouse in New Malton, New Malton St Leonard, Yorkshire, England.[2]
By the 1860's he was working on the railways as a navvy and worked his way up to become a mainline guard with the North Eastern Railway.
In the 1871 census Walter (age 20) was the servant of John Kirby in Welham, Norton, Yorkshire, England.[3]
In 1872, the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants (ASRS) was formed. The ASRS was a trade union for railway workers. He joined early in their formation, and would be an active member of the ASRS for many years.
Walter's marriage to Anne Thompson was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1873 in the Darlington district.[4]

Walter became the President of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants (ASRS) from 1892-1899 and was the assistant General Secretary from 1913-1919.

Walter was one of the 29 Labour MPs elected in the 1906 general election.
He represented Newcastle upon Tyne from 1906 to 1918.
In the 1921 census Walter (age 69), with no occupation, was a married patient at 14 Henrietta Street, St Marylebone, London & Middlesex, England.[10]
Walter's death (age 83) was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1935 in the Lambeth district.[11]
