According to his death certificate, Francis Earl Huff was born 24 Jul 1900. A birth record was not located and there was previously a question as to whether his birth name was Francis Earl Huff or Earl Francis Huff. In censuses, he was variously enumerated as Francis E Huff (1910), Earl Huff (in 1920) and Earl F Huff (in 1930). From the 1910 census, as a 9-year old whose name would likely have been provided by his parent(s), it would appear that his birth name was Francis. In confirmation of this, his death certificate was under Francis Earl Huff.[1] However, he was said to have gone by Earl, and it was said that his obituary (not cited and not able to be located for this editing) referred to him as Earl Francis Huff.
In about 1918, he apparently married Muriel Ora Dunlap (nickname: Minnie; aka by her middle name, Ora). No record of a marriage was located. Widowed at about age 33, Ora remarried, to Orvis Laird Bair.[2]
Earl died 21 Nov 1934 from a mine accident at Ebensburg Coal Company Processing Plant & Powerhouse, Colver Mine, Colver, Cambria County, Pennsylvania[3] when he fell from the tipple into a flat car. Francis Earl Huff's death certificate specified his parents to have been John Huff, born in Pennsylvania and Aurelia Rowley, also born in Pennsylvania. His wife and the informant was Mrs. Muriel Huff of Heilwood, Pennsylvania. The cause of death was stated as "Fracture of the neck and other minor injuries received when struck by an empty coal car in coal tiffle of Ebensburg Coal Co."[4]
Earl and Ora were buried at Rowley Cemetery, Hillsdale, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
