Chariton County was known as a very popular place for recently arrived German immigrants to settle. It's quite possible they read Louis Benecke's German-language "immigrant handbook", praising the state in general and Chariton County particularly as amenable to those who had recently arrived from Germany.
John and Mary (Lust) Huff are mentioned in their son Charles' death certificate, along with their birthplaces, given only as Germany. Also see the source citations for their son Charles, which mentions John and Mary as his parents. Census records also confirm this (need to be added).
