Biography

Frederick HOFF (1774 PA - 1855 17 June 1853 Sandy Township, Tuscarawas, Ohio, ) was the son of Gottfried Hoff and Elizabeth Hoffman.

On 5 Jun 1827 in Tuscarawas, Ohio, Frederick Huff married (1) Magdalena Suitor[1] ( - d. 13 Mar 1829).

On 14 Jun 1831 in Tuscarawas, Ohio, Frederick Huff married (2) Elizabeth Fuger[2]

Some trees list a marriage to Barbara CLEMMER ( - prob. d before 1840), dau of Lawrencer CLEMMER. More research required.

The clearest evidence for Frederick HOFF is the census records of Allegany Co, MD, where he lived the latter part of his life at Selbysport in what was the 2d Electoral District. He apparently lived with his son Abraham without a wife, in 1840 and 1850. Ch prob incl:

a. Samuel (1805 MD - 21 Apr 1855 Mahaska Co, IA, age 49, of cholera) md Eliza ??? (10 May 1811 - 24 Apr 1866 Mahaska Co, IA, of cholera) and in 1850 had Herman; David; Elizabeth; Maria; Elmyra; and William. Three of these ch died from cholera along with their parents. They were buried in the Peoria Cem, Richland twp, Mahaska Co, IA. The remaining ch were adopted by local people, but one died in 1857 and is also buried in Peoria Cem. Samuel was a mill-wright in 1850 in Allegany Co, MD, but he had moved west afterwards. The youngest son, William HOFF, may have lived in Oskaloosa at one time. A William HOFF was buried at South English, IA, but it may be a different person.

b. Tobias (1807 MD - 1865 Allegany Co, MD) c 1830 md Phebe RUTAN (Feb 1814 MD - after 1904) and had 14 ch by tradition. Those identified incl: Thornton Fleming; Francis Asbury; Zebulon M. Pike; John A.; Maria; Ralph Thare; Lawrence; Jocob C.; Abraham Dumonville; Isabella S.; and Jerusha. He was a sawyer. They were Lutherans.

c. Abraham (1810 MD - 29 Sep 1862, bur Blooming Rose Cem) was a miller in Allegany Co, MD, in 1850 md to Huldah ??? (1815 PA - bur Blooming Rose Cem) , and ch incl Martha; Lorenzo; Samuel; Louisa; Benjamin; and Emily. His apparent father lived with him in 1840 and 1850.

d. Jacob ( ) listed by descendants.

e. Isaac ( ) listed by descendants. In 1830, an Isaac HOFF was in Allegany Co, MD, with 10001-10001. He could have been son of either Frederick or Elisha HUFF.

f & g. Census records indicate there may have been two daughters.

Hoff lineage is Frederick Hoff of PA and MD; (The family tradition is that the father of Frederick was Frederick Hoff, Sr, who came to America in July 1780, at the age of 33 years to fight in the Revolutionary War. It is possible with this description that he was a Hessian soldier who elected to stay in America. This family tradition was recorded by the oldest son of George Washington HOFF, who also had a son Bill HOFF.)

Hoff-1246 and Huff-3051 appear to represent the same person because: Find a grave and marriage record both have Huff. Same find a grave on both profiles.
