Biography

Anthony (Theunis) HOFF (10 Sep 1730 NJ/NY - 4 Apr 1832, Rush twp, Northumberland Co, PA age 101 yr, 6 mo, 25 days) died intestate and in 1838 Henry KLINE was appointed administrator of his estate.

Anthony HOFF may have md two or three times, but the wife with him in 1808 through 1818 was Susanna ??? ( - 1818 Northumberland Co, PA). Her maiden name may have been HOPEY, or that could have been the given name of an earlier wife. Bible records show Hopey as mother of sons John and James.

Anthony HOFF (or HUFF) served in some capacity during the Rev. War, as he received 332 pounds, 8 shillings, 9 pence, Continental money, from Robert HOOPS, the Assistant Commissioner of Purchases, for his services, on Certificate #71, on 28 Mar 1781. (Commisary General's Dept. No 1, Voucher 19). This was apparently in Hunterdon Co, NJ. The original record in 1969 was on file in the Bureau of Archives and History, New Jersey State Library, Trenton, NJ.

Anthony HOFF is believed to have moved from Hunterdon Co, NJ, to Northumberland Co, PA, between 1800 and 1810, In 1808, he bought land from James HAMILTON, Esq, of Philadelphia. (DB 14:527, 17 Feb 1808). John HUFF also bought land from James HAMILTON. This John may have been either a brother or a son. In 1808 and 1810, Anthony and Susanna HOFF sold land to Peter VAN SICKLE as part of the same transaction in purchasing from James HAMILTON, and transferred other land to Anthony HUFF, Jr. It would appear he was clearing his affairs in NJ, settling some of his children there. (The James HAMILTON holdings had been purchased in 1774 by HAMILTON as a speculation.)

When he moved, he was following KLINE relatives or frients. They settled in the community of the Kline Methodist Ch in Shamokin twp. In 1810, Anthony bought 140 acres of land in Shamokin twp from John MOWRER. In 1812, he sold 69 acres of this land to his son Henry. At the same time Henry HOFF sold 102 acres to Anthony HOFF. Henry and his wife Osie had obtained this land in 1810 from Charles ECKMAN and wife. In 1818, Anthony HOFF sold all his household goods and livestock to Nicholas RANDALL. His wife Susanna was alive at the time. When Henry KLINE began to administer Anthony HOFF's estate, he found the debts exceeded the value of all property. He sold the property in 1838 to the highest bidder, who was Henry HOFF. There were a number of ch in 1838, all over 21 years of age.

Only three sons have been identified and traced.

  1. John (13 May 1770 NJ - 19 Sep 1824 Ontario Co, NY) md Rachel ALLEN (13 Jan 1774 NJ - 1847 Hillsdale Co, MI), dau of Moses ALLEN, and moved eventually to NY. His ch incl Mary; Hopy; Anthony; John; Eleanor; Moses; Furman; Mahala; and Henry. Most of his ch lived in Ontario Co, NY, and Hillsdale Co, MI.
  2. James (18 Mar 1776 NJ - 6 Apr 1826 Butler Co, OH) md Sarah THATCHER (2 Apr 1776 NJ - 9 Nov 1852 Cass Co, MI), dau of Amos THATCHER, and had Susanna; Amos; Isaac P.; John; James; Wesley; and possibly others. He started his family in PA but moved to Butler Co, OH. His widow and ch moved on to Cass Co, MI.
  3. Anthony, Jr (1780 NJ - will of 3 June 1851, inv. 11 Mar 1853) on 23 Oct 1807 in Hunterdon Co, NJ, md Sarah ALPAUGH (1784 NJ - will of 11 June 1861, proved 2 Feb 1869), and they remained in Alexandria twp of Hunterdon Co. Ch were William A.; Catura; John; Charles, and Jesse R.
  4. Henry (1788 NJ - PA) md (1) Osee COLEY (16 Jul 1793 NJ - 21 Aug 1840 PA), and apparently stayed in Northumberland Co, PA as HOFF and Methodist. The Klinegrove Methodist Ch showed ch to be Philip; Mary Ann; William; Isaac; Mahlon; Anthony; Margaret; Ellen. After Osee d, Henry md (2) Mrs Mary ?GEADRICK? (1809 NJ/PA - ) and they may have had a child named Cooley.
  5. poss Rachel ( ) md Abraham PRALL.

There is considerable evidence that Peter VAN SICKLE was a relative, either a step-son or son-in-law. In the 1808 transaction, it is said Peter was listed as son-in-law, which in the usage of the times could have been step-son. It is clear that in 1808 and 1810, Anthony and Susanna sold land to Peter VANSICKLE. Peter VAN SICKLE and Charles CARTER made inventory of the estate of Garret COVENHOVEN of Bethlehem twp of Hunterdon Co. This is recorded in NYGBR Vol 82:212, 4 Oct 1951. Ellen VAN SICKLE, dau of Peter of Alexandria tqp, on 21 June 1827 md George CARPENTER of Warren Co, NJ. Agnes VAN SICKLE, dau of Peter and Ellen (VANDERBILT) VAN SICKLE on 16 Apr 1814 md Peter ALPAUGH. Samuel VAN SICKLE on 7 Aug 1814 md Margaret HORTPENCE, both of Alexandria twp. Research is complicated by the fact that there were several Peter VAN SICKLE individuals. One may have been son of Rynier and Mercy (LANGSTRAET) VAN SICKLE.

Hoff lineage is Anthony and Susanna (?Hopey) of NJ and PA; prob. Anthony and Anna ( ) of NJ; Paulus Dirkse and Gerrtje (Willemse) of Netherlands and NY; Dirk ??? of Van Lutsenborg, Kiel Bay, Netherlands;
