Biography

Lundy HUFF (prob. bef. 1770 Brunswick Co, VA - 16 Oct 1804, killed in a horse accident, Hancock Co, GA) was the son of either Daniel or his brother William Huff.

On 21 Dec 1796 in Brunswick, Virginia he married Pharady READ daughter of Peter Read[1]. It is not yet known if they had children.

On 3 Aug 1799 in Brunswick Co, Virginia, this or another Lundy HUFF married Sarah WHITE[2] ( - ) dau of Blewmer WHITE of Brunswick Co, VA. From circumstantial evidence, it seems probable that Lundy had been married previous to his marriage to Sarah WHITE. If the same person as he who married Pharady READ, he had also been married before 1796. This remains to be confirmed.

Lundy HUFF moved to Hancock Co, GA, c 1800/1801 along with other HUFF families from Brunswick Co, VA. It is believed that this Lundy HUFF family was that of Lundy and Sarah (White) HUFF. On 16 Oct 1804, Lundy HUFF was killed instantly when he was thrown off his horse. Nathaniel WALLER, Esquire, was eyewitness to the accident. An inquest was held which confirmed that Lundy's death was accidental. Samuel WALLER was Coroner. On 15 Dec 1804, James HUFF and Epps BROWN were appointed to admin the Lundy HUFF estate, with Hines HOLT and Robert CLARK as security. On 8 Feb 1805, James HUFF was appointed guardian for HUFF ch Burchett, James, and William. Based on these dates, these would almost certainly be minor ch of Lundy HUFF. (Burchett was a female name from the LUNDY fam.) The name of the widow is not found on the estate papers, but an 1806 Hancock Co lottery showed one Sarah W. HUFF received one draw, possibly as a widow. It is assumed that Sarah W. meant Sarah (WHITE) HUFF, not Sarah (GUNN) HUFF, widow of William HUFF.

Lundy HUFF was apparently one of three Lundy HUFF individuals, all apparently grandch of William and Elizabeth (LUNDY) HUFF. It has been assumed that he was son of Daniel and Southy (LUNDY) HUFF. Daniel HUFF in his 1795 will listed his wife Southey, sons William and Lundy HUFF, dau Milly BOWLES, and youngest children Elizabeth, Daniel, Southy, and Olive. William and Lundy were executors of the will. It is further assumed that one or both of the two marriages in Brunswick Co were by this Lundy HUFF.

Other Brunswick Co, VA, records show that on 1 Apr 1799, Lundia HUFF sold 400 acres of land to Radford GUNN (DB 17:374). Also in 1799, William HUFF, Jr, sold land to Lundia HUFF (DB 17:377). William HUFF, Jr, was likely brother to Lundy. So there were one or more Lundy HUFF's buying and selling land in Brunswick Co, VA, in 1799.

Another deed may be of special significance. On 28 Jan 1799 in Brunswick Co, Radford GUNN, brother-in-law to William HUFF, Sr, gave a 24 year old negro woman named Amy to his HUFF relations Richard, Henry, Elizabeth, Burchet, William, and James. (It seems likely that the negro woman was a nursemaid given to a group of young children, as it would not make sense to give one slave to a group of six adults. The last three named ch are the same names as the three who came under guardianship of James HUFF in Hancock Co, GA, in 1805 after Lundy HUFF's death. The problem becomes confirming the parents of these six children, or at least the household to which they belonged. As William and Sarah (GUNN) HUFF were fairly old at the time, it seems these six would be in the generation of their grandchildren. If all six were ch of Lundy HUFF, then there would have been a marriage earlier than 1796.

Hancock Co, GA, records are complicated by the fact that William HUFF, Sr, died by 1 Dec 1806, soon after Lundy HUFF, presumably also leaving a wife Sarah. Further, James HUFF admin. his estate; and this is believed to be the same James HUFF whom admin the estate of Lundy HUFF. (It should also be recalled that the terms Sr and Jr, as used at the time, merely meant "the elder" and "the younger," with no blood relationship implied. William HUFF, Sr, in 1799 in Brunswick Co, VA, was William, son of William and Elizabeth (LUNDY) HUFF. William HUFF, Jr, was William, son of Daniel and Southy (LUNDY) HUFF. The relationship was uncle and nephew. Similarly, James HUFF, Sr, in the 1790's in Brunswick Co, VA, was James, son of William and Elizabeth; and James HUFF, Jr, was son of Daniel and Mary HUFF, and the relationship was probably first cousin. These Sr and Jr designations would be true only in the one county. In the next county, the older or younger William or James could be different. When the eldest died in a jurisdiction, everyone in that jurisdiction moved up a notch.)

The following must be investigated as possible ch of Lundy HUFF, mother not identified.

  1. Burchet (minor in 1805 in Hancock Co, GA - ) listed in both the 1799 Radford GUNN deed and in 1805 under guardianship of James HUFF.
  2. William (minor in 1805 in Hancock Co, GA - ) listed in both the 1799 Radford GUNN deed and in 1805 under guardianship of James HUFF.
  3. James (minor in 1805 in Hancock Co, GA - ) listed in both the 1799 Radford GUNN deed and in 1805 under guardianship of James HUFF.
  4. Richard (prob. minor in 1799 Brunswick Co, VA - ) listed in 1799 in Radford GUNN deed.
  5. Henry (prob minor in 1799 Brunswick Co, VA, prob. adult by 1804 in Hancock Co, VA - ) was listed in 1804 on Hancock Co, Huff Dist., tax list. In the 1806 county lottery, he had one draw as a single man. One Henry HUFF was in Hall Co, GA, on 27 Nov 1828 when he md Martha PEWES. He was still there in 1832 in Herndon's Dist when he won lot #260, 8th Dist, 3rd Sec., Cherokee Co (later Murray Co). In 1833, there was a Henry HUFF in Jasper Co, GA, buying land formerly belonging to Hamlin HUFF, with Thomas HUFF as witness.
  6. Elizabeth (prob minor in 1799 Brunswick Co, VA - ) listed in 1799 in Radford GUNN deed.

Names of other possible ch are not now known. Further, it is not known what happened to widow Sarah (WHITE) HUFF. As she seemed to be fairly young, she probably md and had another family. There is a possibility, of course, that she returned to Brunswick Co, VA.

Probable Huff lineage is Lundy and two or more wives of VA and GA; posss. Daniel and Southy (Lundy) of Brunswick Co, VA; William and Elizabeth (Lundy) of VA;
