According to the 1859 record of his marriage to Margaret Jane Wood, John was born in Tyler County, West Virginia. Tyler County was formed in 1864 so in 1837, the year of John's birth, not only had it not been formed but the area was still a part of Virginia. In addition, the area of his place of birth may have been in a part that later became Wetzel County. John's father was specified in the marriage record to have been David. Was this perhaps an incorrect entry that should have read Daniel?, or was David also known as Daniel? Something along these lines would appear to have been the case. John's mother was specified to have been Elizabeth Huff.[1]
In this marriage record source, the information was as follows: 18 AUG 1859 John L. Huff and Margaret Jane Wood, aged 22 and 21, respectively, were married in Wetzel County, West Virginia. Both were single and had been born in Tyler County, VA. Parents of the groom, who was a farmer, were Daniel and Elizabeth Huff. The bride's parents were simply listed as "Wood-Wood."[2][3] The marriage record for Michael Huff and Delilah Kirkhart is on the same page, if you follow the West Virginia Culture link. It lists Daniel (in abbreviated form) and Elizabeth Huff as Michael's parents, although the legibility issue could account for why it could have been mistaken for "David." The two men are most likely brothers with the same parents, as indicated by the burial information and other information cited in this profile. Find A Grave: Memorial #16644003

WV; Joseph D.-10 and James L., aged 8. Also in the home was 51-year-old Sarah Jennings, a widow whose job was housekeeping. She could not read or write and had been born in Indiana. [5]
In a Cemetery Index of Parsons Cemetery - Huff Ridge,[6] Daniel & Elizabeth (Jacobs) Huff were specified to have been the parents of John Huff. Additional supportive information for this parentage is covered below, in the section with John's burial information.
John was married at least twice and his wives and family members were:
In 1859, in Wetzel County, and recorded in West Virginia Marriages (although at the time of the marriage, the area was a part of Virginia), Margaret Jane Wood married John L. Huff. Wetzel County had been created in 1846 from Tyler County. The Wetzel County area fell within the area of Virginia and remained a part of that state until the formation of West Virginia in 1863.
Margaret died in 1874, and 3 Dec 1887 in Wetzel County, West Virginia, John married Anna Belle Butler.
John Larkin Huff was buried in the Huff Cemetery, Wetzel County, West Virginia. In the same Huff Cemetery, where only 9 burials have been recorded in Find A Grave, were buried: Samantha Huff (25 Sep 1855 - 14 May 1876); Martha Jane Huff (2 Dec 1861 - 23 Sep 1896); and Charles Huff (6 Aug 1870 Wetzel County, West Virginia - 9 Mar 1891). They are indicated as being children of Michael Huff (1835 – 1907) and Delilah (Kirkhart) Huff. Michael and Delilah, however, were buried in Parsons Cemetery, Wetzel County, West Virginia. Comparing their years of birth, it would appear possible that Michael was a brother of John Larkin Huff. Of particular note is that Michael's Memorial indicates that he was a son of Daniel and Elizabeth Huff. This raises a question of whether Michael's father Daniel Huff may be one and the same as the David of John Larkin Huff's marriage record.
There is a Find A Grave, Memorial ID 135650513, for a Daniel Huff (1799 - 10 Sep 1873 Wetzel County, West Virginia), spouse of Elizabeth Huff (1800 - 19 Mar or 9 Mar, per death record, 1874 Wetzel County, West Virginia. Both Daniel and Elizabeth are indicated as buried in the Moore Cemetery, Proctor, Wetzel County, West Virginia. They would appear to have been the Daniel and Elizabeth who were the parents of Michael Huff, and possibly parents of John Larkin Huff.
Additionally, in the 1850 census record for Wetzel County, Virginia, the household of Daniel Huff, age 57 (it does appear to read 57, but in later censuses, Daniel is only one year older than Elizabeth), born in Virginia and Elizabeth Huff, age 50, born in Maryland, included Michael Huff, age 15, born in Virginia and John Huff, age 13, born in Virginia (matching the year of birth of John Larkin Huff). Also in the household were Rachel, age 17, and Frances M. (a male), age 10.[7]
Can you add to his biography? Family stories and legends welcomed!
One family legend is that John Larkin Huff's father was a Daniel Huff, who came to America from Germany with his brother (what was the brother's name?). The story goes that Daniel settled in West Virginia and his brother settled (who knows where?, what county, etc.) in Georgia. There may be at least a shred or two of truth to the legend... that perhaps there was a Daniel and brother (name?). If this Daniel and a brother were the immigrant ancestors, the immigrant Daniel would unlikely have been John's father. If the David or John's marriage record was actually--or also known as Daniel--two censuses indicate that Daniel to have been born in Virginia, and one census (the latest one), in West Virginia. Also, "Germany" per se would not have existed yet, but it seems plausible that ancestral origins may have been in the vicinity of what later became Germany.
