The date and place of his birth are uncertain as are the names of his parents. He is often said to have been born in Germany. This may or may not be true - I am unfortunately not aware of any evidence that would either prove or disprove this. He claimed land on Boyds Creek in Orange County NC on 26 Jul 1778 and 21 Sep 1779. On 8 Oct 1783 he purchased land on Craigs Creek in Botetourt County VA.

His wife’s name was given as Sophia in a 1787 indenture for the sale of land in Orange County NC to his son-in-law John Elmore. He and his wife Sophia were living in Botetourt County VA at that time. A 1800 indenture names his heirs as Jacob Huffman, John Huffman and wife Mary, Thomas Abbott and wife Mary (Huffman) Abbott, John Elmore and wife Elizabeth (Huffman) Elmore and Griffeth Thomas and wife Catherine “Katy” (Huffman) Thomas. Based on these indentures, his date of death would be between 1787 and 1800.
