Biography

Mary Sue Huffman was born 1907 in Craig County, Virginia, USA. She was the daughter of David Huffman and Ida Jones.

1910s

In 1910, Mary S Huffman (4) lived in New Castle with her father David and mother Ida B (38). David and Ida had been married 7 years. Ida was the mother of 1 child, living. David worked as a farmer on a general farm. ^{[1] [2]}

In Oct 1910, her brother William Brownie Huffman was born in Craig County. ^{[3] [4]}

In Jun 1914, her grandfather Joseph Hiram Huffman (85) died. ^[5]

1920s

In 1920, Mary S Huffman (13) lived in New Castle with her father David H (42), mother Ida B (47), and brother William B (9). ^[6]

On 1 Apr 1922, her father Dave Huffman (45) died from a self-inflicted bullet to the head in Craig county. He was white, married, worked as a carpenter, born in Botetourt county, and son of Joseph Huffman and Mary E Bradley. The informant of his death was Mary E Huffman of New Castle. He was buried Apr 3rd at Abbott graveyard in New Castle. His grave can be found at Lee Damewood Cemetery in Abbott. ^[7]

On 25 Oct 1922, Mary Sue Huffman (17) married Foy Kenneth Sho (23) in Craig County. Foy was single, born in Buchanan, Virginia, and the son of J S and Maggie Shockley. Mary was single, born in Craig County, and the daughter of David and Ida B Huffman. ^[8]

On 17 Sep 1923, her daughter Helen Marie Shockley was born in Alleghany, Craig County. On September 22nd, her daughter Helen Shockley (5d) died in Alleghany from patulaus foraweu ovale (?). ^[9]

1925, her son Foy David Shockley was born.

On 15 Aug 1929, her mother Ida B Huffman (53) married William Pendleton Huffman (63) in Craig, Henry County, Virginia. William was widowed, born in Craig County, and the son of James and Sarah Huffman. Ida was widowed, born in Craig County, and the daughter of Mr Jones. ^[10]

1930, Mary S Shockley (24) and her son Foy D (5) were living in Big Lick, Roanoke County from their landlord Randolph T Arrington (46), his wife Minta P Arrington (44), daughter Eula V Arrington (20), son Ramsey M Arrington (12), daughter Florence I Stafford (22), son-in-law Ira H Stafford (34), granddaughter Flossie M Stafford (2), and grandson Arnold R Stafford (1). ^[11]

On 1 Jul 1931, Mary Huffman Shockley (26) divorced Foy Kenneth Shockley (32) in Roanoke City. Mary lived in Roanoke, was white, born in Craig County. Foy was white, born in Buchanan, Virginia, and worked as a laborer. They had married on 25 Oct 1922 in New Castle. The cause was desertion over three years and the case was uncontested. They had one child. ^[12]

On 7 May 1932, her mother Ida Huffman died. She was buried at Lee Damewood Cemetery in Abbot, Craig County. ^[13]

On 6 May 1933, Mary Sue Huffman (26) married James Guthrie Barton (22) in Roanoke County, Virginia. James was single, American, white, born 1911 in Bedford County, and the son of Clarence A and Mary Brown Barton. Mary was divorced, white, born in Craig County, and the daughter of David and Ida Jones Huffman. ^[14]

1940, Mary S Barton (34) lived in Roanoke with her husband J Garthie (29). ^[15]

In the early 1940s, her daughter R L Barton was born in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland. ^[16]

On 8 Aug 1946, her son Foy David Shockley (21) married Blanche Adeline Lee (<21). Mr Shockley was white, single, worked as a truck driver, born in New Castle, lived at 1923 Kenwood Blvd SE in Roanoke, and the son of Kenneth and Mary Huffman Shockley. Ms Lee was white, single, born in Salem, lived in Roanoke, and the daughter of Rank D and Mary Watkins Lee. They were married by George H Orser, minister of the Methodist church. ^[19]

In the mid 1960s, her son C W Barton (<21) married M E Clingenpeel (<21). Mr Barton was white, single, worked for the US Air Force, born in Baltimore, son of James G and Mary Huffman Barton, and lived at the Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Ms Clingenpeel was white, single, a student, born in Roanoke, lived in Roanoke, and the daughter of Raymond E and Julia Brown Clingenpeel. They were married by Daniel F Page, minister of the Waverly Place Baptist church. ^[17]

IN the mid 1960s, her daughter R L Barton (20s) married J A Guimond (20s) in Roanoke. Mr Guimond was white, single, worked as an engineer for Johnson-March Corp, born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, son of joseph A and Pauline Kehs Guimond, and lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ms Barton was white, single, worked as a teacher, born in Baltimore, daughter of James G and Mary Huffman Barton, lived at 2033 Kenwood Blvd SE in Roanoke. They were married by Daniel F Page, minister of the Baptist church. ^[16]

In the early 1980s, her son C W Barton (30s) married D N Hebrank (30s) in Hampton, Virginia. Mr Barton was white, divorced from his first marriage, born in Maryland, high school graduate, lived in Hampton, and the son of James and Mary Huffman Barton. Ms Hebrank was white, divorced from her third marriage, born in Maryland, high school graduate, lived with Mr Barton in Hampton, and the daughter of Elven and Garnette Ayers Simpson. They were married by the installation staff chaplain at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton. ^[18]

2000s

On 14 Nov 2002, Mary Barton (96) died. Her obituary was published in The Roanoke Times on November 15th. The family members listed in her obituary were her husband James Garthie Barton, sons C William "Billy" Barton, F David Shockley, daughter Ruth (Joseph) Guimond, brother William Brownie Huffman, nieces Betty Ring and Linda Stull, sister-in-law Grace Barton, and mother Ida Jones Huffman. ^{[20] [21] [22] [23]}
